ROLLA, Mo. – Fresh off a road win over a nationally-ranked team, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team will head back to the road to open its Great Lakes Valley Conference season Sunday when the Miners take on Quincy in Quincy, Ill.
After losing its season opener on Thursday to 22
nd-ranked Midwestern State, the Miners got a second half goal from
Leyton Harper (Andover, KS/Central) and made that goal hold up in a 1-0 win over 19
th-ranked Northeastern State in Tahlequah, Okla., two days later. Harper scored the first goal of his Miner career in the 51
st minute, then the S&T defense and goalkeeper
Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central) took care of the rest.
Joseph finished with seven saves to get the shutout and in the process, earned GLVC Defensive Player of the Week honors. He became the first Miner since 2017 to earn the conference's weekly honor, which was also the last season in which S&T recorded a win over a nationally-ranked team.
Grant Polman (Wentzville, MO/Holt) has a team-high three shots to lead the Miners in that department, while the two goalkeepers – Joseph and
Michael Sallee (Springfield, MO/Catholic) – have combined for a 1.50 goals against average.
ABOUT QUINCY: The Hawks, picked to finish in a tie for third in the GLVC in the pre-season coaches poll, also split its two games on opening weekend as they rebounded from a loss to Wisconsin-Parkside with a 1-0 win of their own Sunday at Northern Michigan. Quincy got the game-winning goal on Jack Rhead's penalty kick goal in the 73
rd minute.
Rhead has scored two of the Hawks' three goals this season, while the third came from Cole Hayes in the loss to Parkside. Quincy has outshot its opponents 33-17 in the first two contests of the year.
Michele Barletta has gone the distance in goal in both games and has a 1.50 goals against average with two saves.
Quincy beat the Miners 2-1 in the regular season finale in Rolla in April, with Rhead and Hayes scoring for Quincy and
Dario Rossell (Madrid, Spain/IES Lazaro Cardenas) tallying the goal for the Miners.
