Mahurin, Boucher selected as S&T's Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners

6/16/2021 2:30:00 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – Two Missouri S&T student-athletes – Braden Mahurin (Dixon, MO/Dixon) and Cameryn Boucher (Chandler, Ariz./Basha) -- have been named as the institution's recipient of the James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Individual Award winners for the 2020-21 school year.  The award winners were announced today by the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Each institution – through the head coach – names one award honoree in each sport sponsored. These individual sport honorees became candidates for the individual James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award, then each institution selects one male and one female student-athlete from its season-long list of honorees to be named as James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Individual Award winners.

Mahurin, a junior catcher on the Miner baseball team, is majoring in engineering management at Missouri S&T and is coming off a season in which he batted .298 and drove in seven runs.  He was also the baseball team's nominee for the honor following both the 2019 and 2020 seasons.

Boucher, who recently graduated from Missouri S&T with a bachelor's degree in biochemical engineering, was a four-year member of the women's soccer program and a starter along the back line.  This was the first season in which Boucher had been nominated for the honor.

During the 2020-21 academic year, Missouri S&T's swimming, men's golf and women's soccer teams were selected as the team award recipients for their respective sports, as the Miner program was one of just three in the GLVC that had at least three of its teams selected.

The GLVC renamed its annual sportsmanship award in 2016 after Spalding, who is referenced as one of the league's two "Founding Fathers" and for his longtime service at Bellarmine. Long revered as one of the league's pioneers, Spalding was inducted as a charter member of the GLVC Hall of Fame in 2001. He died in 2012 at the age of 79, following a lengthy illness.
