Miners to wrap up road slate in Illinois this weekend

ROLLA, Mo. – With the season down to its final three games, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team will hit the road for the final time in the 2021 spring season as it heads into Illinois for a pair of contests this weekend.

The Miners, 3-7-1 on the season, will take on Lewis in Romeoville, Ill., on Friday in a 5:30 p.m. match, then plays their final road game of the season Sunday when they take on Illinois Springfield at 2:30 p.m.

S&T has dropped its last four matches since knocking off Lindenwood on March 21, with three of the four losses being one-goal setbacks.  The Miners hung in all day on Saturday with sixth-ranked Indianapolis, but an early goal by the Greyhounds held up in the 1-0 setback.

Jason Jorgensen (Florence, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Santa Maria) continues to lead the Miners in scoring with three goals on the year, while Paal Benum (Trondheim, Norway/Byaasen Videregaadende) and Dario Rossell (Madrid, Spain/IES Lazaro Cardenas) have two goals apiece.  Grant Polman (Wentzville, MO/Holt) also has four points on a goal and a team-high two assists.

In goal, Michael Sallee (Springfield, MO/Catholic) has a 1.41 goals against average in seven contests, while Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central) has appeared in four games and owns a 1.37 mark in the nets.

Lewis comes into the weekend with 19 points in the GLVC standings, which has the Flyers in a tie for fourth with Quincy.  Owners of a 6-4-1 record, the Flyers are paced in the scoring department by Domenic Baumann with four goals and five assists, while Matthew Beaulieu has two goals and three assists.  Jimmy Mwanga and Sebastian Arguello have also scored twice each for Lewis.

Will Maurice has played every minute in goal for the Flyers and has a 1.27 goals against average with 20 saves.

Illinois Springfield has not played since March 21 due to COVID-19 protocols and is scheduled to resume play Friday against Drury.  The Prairie Stars are currently 2-2-3 on the year, with one of the ties coming against Indianapolis.

UIS has scored just four goals in those seven games which have come from four different players; Quentin Reese also has an assist to go with his goal.  Pijus Petkevicius has a 0.52 goals against average in nearly 700 minutes of play this season.
