ROLLA, Mo. – With one game left on its regular season schedule, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team will look to extend its season Friday night in its final home contest as the Miners take on Quincy University at 7:30 p.m.
Following road victories last week at Lewis and Illinois Springfield, the Miners find themselves in 10
th place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings with a point average of 1.23 (16 points in 12 games based on their 5-7-1 record), with Drury and UIS within range. If the Miners win Friday and are able to move up two spots in the standings, they will play in an opening round contest in the GLVC Tournament on Monday.
The Miners used some second half heroics to get the two wins last week, scoring twice in the final 5:10 of play to knock off Lewis and getting a goal in the 64
th minute from
Dario Rossell (Madrid, Spain/IES Lazaro Cardenas) for the only tally in the win over Illinois Springfield.
Josh Wobbe (Collinsville, IL/Collinsville) scored the tying goal with 5:10 remaining at Lewis, then
Julien Denis (Olathe, KS/Olathe East) headed in a free kick from
Sean Perryman (Springfield, MO/Glendale) just 1:21 later for the game-winner.
Jason Jorgensen (Florence, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Santa Maria), who also scored in the Lewis contest, leads the Miners with four goals on the season, while Rossell has scored three times and
Paal Benum (Trondheim, Norway/Byaasen Videregaadende) – one of three Miner seniors that will be honored prior to Friday's contest – has scored twice.
Grant Polman (Wentzville, MO/Holt) has two assists on the season to lead S&T in that department.
Michael Sallee (Springfield, MO/Catholic) handled the goalkeeping duties in both games and recorded his first shutout of the year in Sunday's win at UIS. He has a 1.32 goals against average in 884 minutes of play, while
Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central) has a 1.37 mark in 329 minutes of action.
Quincy enters play Friday in third place in the GLVC standings and is trying to secure a home game in the first round of the tournament; the Hawks are 8-4-1 (25 points, point average of 1.92) as play begins this week and have won five of their last six contests.
The Hawks, who pulled out an overtime win over the Miners in Rolla in the last meeting in October 2019, are the third-highest scoring team in the GLVC with 24 goals and are paced by Aubrey Reis with six goals and two assists for 14 points. Cole Hayes has four goals and three assists for 11 points and Craig Chisholm has scored three times.
Michele Barletta and Christos Kalaitzis have split time in goal this spring, with Barletta owning a 0.90 goals against mark and Kalaitzis making 25 saves to go along with his mark of 1.51 in goal.
