ROLLA, Mo. – After going through two overtime games in the opening weekend of action, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team will hit the road for a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference contests this weekend as the Miners head west to face Rockhurst and Southwest Baptist.
S&T will open the weekend in Kansas City to take on Rockhurst in a 2:30 p.m. game, then the Miners will head to Bolivar, Mo., Sunday to face Southwest Baptist at 2:30 p.m.
The Miners suffered a loss in their season opener at Truman State as the Bulldogs scored on a direct free kick in the final minute of the first overtime period, then played to a 1-1 tie Sunday against William Jewell at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
Paal Benum (Trondheim, Norway/Byaasen Videregaadende) scored the goal for the Miners off an assist from
Leyton Harper (Andover, KS/Central) nearly three minutes after the Cardinals had taken the initial lead in the 39
th minute of play.
S&T goalkeepers
Michael Sallee (Springfield, MO/Catholic) and
Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central) have split time in goal this year, with Sallee recording a goals against average of 0.55 over the first two contests with four saves. Benum and
Jason Jorgensen (Florence, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Santa Maria) lead the Miners with four shots apiece.
Rockhurst and Southwest Baptist played to a 1-1 tie in last Friday's season opener in Kansas City, then the Hawks downed Drury 1-0 Sunday to move to 1-0-1 prior to this weekend's matchup with the Miners. Alessandro Macchioni scored the lone goal for the Hawks in the SBU contest and Jordan Andrews scored the game-winner in Sunday's victory in the 76
th minute of action.
Fabio D'Errico has made four saves in the two contests in goal for the Hawks.
Southwest Baptist was able to gain a draw in its game at Rockhurst – SBU's only game last weekend – thanks to a goal in the 87
th minute by Francisco Gonzalez. Despite being outshot 14-5 in the game, the Bearcats were able to get the tie thanks to the work in goal by Will vanHoornbeek, who was credited with seven saves in 110 minutes of play.
