ROLLA, Mo. – After suffering a pair of tough one-goal losses over the weekend, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team returns home this weekend for a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference matches – including one against the current leader in the conference standings.
Missouri S&T will open its weekend with a visit from Southern Indiana on Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. contest, then takes on GLVC leader and sixth-ranked Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
The Miners, who come into Thursday's contest at 3-5-1 for 10 points in the spring season, dropped a pair of 2-1 decisions last weekend to Missouri-St. Louis and McKendree. S&T was unable to make up a two-goal deficit in the loss to UMSL, getting its only tally from leading scorer
Jason Jorgensen (Florence, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Santa Maria) as he scored his third goal of the season. On Sunday, the Miners got a game-tying goal in the second half from
Dario Rossell (Madrid, Spain/IES Lazaro Cardenas), but lost the contest at McKendree when a last-second shot that went into the net was ruled to have crossed the goal line before time expired.
Rossell and
Paal Benum (Trondheim, Norway/Byaasen Videregaadende) have two goals apiece for the Miners, while four others have scored goals on the year.
Miner goalkeepers
Michael Sallee (Springfield, MO/Catholic) and
Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central) have combined for a 1.37 goals against average – both keepers have that identical goals against mark and have made nine saves apiece.
Southern Indiana has 13 points in the standings as it owns a 4-4-1 mark, but dropped a 2-0 decision to Drury on Sunday. The Screaming Eagles have won just once in their last four outings, with the one win coming in a 1-0 shutout over Southwest Baptist last Friday.
Zach Barton leads USI with six goals on the year, while Colten Walsh and Graham Miller each have a pair of goals. Justin Faas has posted a 1.45 goals against average in 806 minutes of action and has made 31 saves.
Indianapolis, who reached the NCAA Division II national semifinals in 2019, takes a league-best 8-0-1 record (25 points) into a Thursday contest at Drury and has outscored its opponents 19-3 on the season. The Greyhounds have shut out their last four opponents and the only blemish on their record was a scoreless tie with Illinois Springfield on March 12.
Dimitrios Karousas has a GLVC-best 0.33 goals against average with 10 saves on the season. Cole Rainwater and Alejandro Steinwascher have six goals apiece to lead UIndy on the offensive side, while Michael Tselios is tied for the conference lead with five assists.
