Miners Head North for Final Weekend of Play

2/23/2021 9:43:00 AM

ROLLA, MO- In their last weekend of the season, the Miners will head north to take on the Flyers of Lewis University on Thursday night and the Prairie Stars of Illinois Springfield on Saturday afternoon.

S&T nearly made a comeback this past Saturday afternoon against the Greyhounds of Indianapolis. After looking at a deficit as much as 16, the Miners would go on a 17-4 run to open the fourth quarter and tie the game at 69-69 with just over two minutes left in the game.

While the Miners effort put them within reaching distance of defeating the Greyhounds, UIndy would sink six free-throws in the final 42 seconds of the game to take the 79-72 win.

Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) had a season-high day with 25 points while going 9-14 from the field and 7-10 from the free-throw line while Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) added in 14 points and Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) chipped in 13.

For the season,  Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) and Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy), who are both in the top-20 in scoring/game in the conference, are leading the Miners with 15.8 and 15.4 points/game, respectively, while Kristen Keys (St. Louis, MO/Westminster Christian Academy) and Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) are adding in 12.2 and 10.8 points.

Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy), who is second in the GLVC in rebounds/game, is bringing down just over 10 boards each game.

Lewis:
The Flyers (11-8, 11-8 GLVC) are coming off a rough loss to the Panthers of Drury University this past Saturday. Both their offense and defense struggled to get into a rhythm and ended up getting outscored 49-24 in the second half and suffered the 100-57 loss. Lewis is now currently in a three-way tie for first place in the East with Southern Indiana and Indianapolis.

Despite the loss, Lewis had two players score in double figures; Jenna Badali led the team with 15 points while Lindsay Harrison added in 11 points and 11 rebounds.

For the season, Lewis has been led by the duo of Jenna Badali and Kathryn Schmidt who are bringing in 12.9 and 12.4 points/game, respectively, while Schmidt is grabbing a team-best 6.3 rebounds/game.

In year's past, the Miners have struggled against the Flyers, winning just three of the last 19 matchups. They are currently on an eight-game losing skid against Lewis, not seeing a win over them since the 2012-13 season and not getting one in Romeoville since January of 2008.

Last season when the two teams met, S&T came back from a 23-10 deficit in the first quarter to cut the Flyers lead to just four after Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic) sank a three-pointer with 54 left in the first half. The Miners would keep within reaching distance of Lewis for much of the second half, but their early deficit proved to be too much to recover from and they suffered the 71-63 loss.

In the loss, three Miners scored in double figures; Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay) led the way with 18 points and 16 rebounds while Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) and Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) added in 16 and 10 points, respectively.

Illinois Springfield:
The Prairie Stars (10-9, 10-9 GLVC) are coming into the final weekend of the regular season off back-to-back wins over Rockhurst and Southwest Baptist.

After being held to just nine second quarter points, Illinois Springfield would come from behind in the fourth quarter and take the lead with 2:08 left in the game. Six made free-throws down the stretch would help the Prairie Stars take the 63-58 win.

Lauren Ladowski led the way for UIS with 28 points, which helped her get to 1000 career points, while Malea Jackson added in 16 points.

For the season, Ladowski and Jackson are leading the Prairie Stars with 18.5 and 13.7 points/game while Makenna Fee is leading the charge on the boards with 5.8 rebounds/game.

The Miners have seen great success over Illinois Springfield in the past, collecting 11 of the last 15 matchups against them. But, the last two seasons, the Prairie Stars have taken the W's.

Earlier this season when the two teams met, the Miners faced a five-point deficit heading into the half, but were held to just 12 points in the third quarter and saw their deficit grow to 11 before heading to the final 10 minutes of the game. While S&T matched them shot-for-shot in the fourth quarter, they were not able to stop the Prairie Stars offense and suffered the 72-61 loss.

In the game, Kristen Keys (St. Louis, MO/Westminster Christian Academy) and Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) led the charge, offensively, with 18 and 17 points, respectively, while Kerr pulled down a game-best 16 rebounds.
