Miners Set to Face Pair of MIAA Foes in Lions, Bearcats

ROLLA, Mo. – Coming off a recording-setting outing in their home-opener Monday night, the Missouri S&T women's basketball team opens a stretch of three-straight games against opponents from the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletic Association Saturday, welcoming Missouri Southern to Gibson Arena for a 1:30 P.M. contest before heading on the road Monday to take on Northwest Missouri State at 6 P.M.
 
The Miners (1-0) powered their way to a 115-50 win over Blackburn Monday night, setting a program single-game record for points scored in the process. Five players finished in double-digits for S&T led by Laura Rodriguez's (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) 22 points on 8-10 shooting, including 5-6 from beyond the arc. Jada Lindesmith (Cincinatti, Ohio/Lutheran) scored a career-high 13 points while Michaela Davis (Keokuk, Iowa/Keokuk), playing in her first official games since the 2018-19 season, came off the bench to score 12 points and dish out a team-high eight assists while also going 8-9 from the stripe. Eryn Puett (Columbia, MO/Rock Bridge) scored 11 points and went 5-7 from the field with six rebounds and three steals while Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) added 10 points and six rebounds.
 
Freshman Katelynne Roberts (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) scored the first nine points other S&T career on 4-5 shooting while pulling down a team-high eight boards and blocking four shots. Addyson Kent (North Vernon, IN/Jennings County), Chorus Davis (Kansas City, MO/Lincoln College Prep), Kristen Keys (St. Louis, MO/Westminster Christian Academy) and Whitney Rush (Palm Harbor, FL/East Lake) all recorded three made field goals while AJ Agers (DeSoto, MO/St. Pius X) and Lilli Machado (St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell) also scored their first points in a Miner uniform as all 12 players who dressed for the game found the scoring column.
 
As a team, S&T shot 57.3% from the floor in the game and 45.2% from three-point land. S&T outrebounded Blackburn 52-33 and forced 29 turnovers, recording 19 steals in the process.
 
Missouri Southern (0-2) is still seeking their first win of the season after dropping a pair of close game in the GAC/MIAA Challenge to open the season. The Lions lost their opener to Henderson State 81-74 before falling to Harding 87-81 in overtime. Four players are averaging double-figure scoring for MSSU, led by Lacy Stokes at 23.0 PPG. Stokes is also tied for the team lead in rebounding with 7.0 RPG and her 17 made free throws, 14 assists and seven steals all lead the team. Layne Skiles is averaging 14.0 PPG and 6.0 RPG followed by Amaya Johns (12.0 PPG/7.0 RPG) and Kaitlin Hunnicutt (12.0 PPG), who leads the team with four made three-pointers on the season.
 
Hailey Grant (4.0 PPG/2.5 RPG) leads the team with four blocked shots while Anna Hall has been the leading scorer off the bench for the Lions, averaging 7.0 PPG. As a team, Missouri Southern has recorded 15 steals in two games and is shooting 38.4% from the floor and 28.6% from long range. The Lions do have an advantage in the rebounding department, averaging 44.0 RPG per night with a margin of +3.5.
 
Northwest Missouri State (1-1) picked up a 53-48 win over Minnesota Crookston last Saturday after dropping their season opener to Southwest Minnesota State by a score of 64-48. Molly Hartnett leads the Bearctas in scoring at 11.5 PPG followed by Payton Kelderman at 9.0 PPG. Jayna Green (7.0 PPG) is NWMSU's leading rebounder with 6.5 RPG while Paityn Rau (8.5 PPG) leads the team with six blocked shots. Evelyn Vasquez (3.5 PPG) leads the team with three steals while Mallory McConkley (6.5 PPG) has a team-high four assists. Nine different players have contributed to the Bearcats scoring output this season.
 
As a team, NWMSU is shooting 33.9% from the field and 24.4% from long range. The Bearcats are in the negative in the rebounding department, pulling down 50.5 per night for a margin of -5.5
 
Missouri Southern leads the all-time series 36-10, winning the last game in 2017 77-61 in Joplin and the last nine meeting in the series dating back to 2003. S&T's last win came in January of that year by a score of 60-53 in Rolla. Northwest Missouri State also leads the all-time series with the Miners 26-18. S&T won the last meeting of the two teams back in November of 2016 by a score of 68-65 in a neutral site match at Missouri Western. Monday's meeting will be just the fourth between the two schools since 2005.
