S&T men's soccer team play pair in St. Louis area this weekend

10/6/2021 10:55:00 AM

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team will look to get back into the win column this weekend when it heads to the St. Louis metropolitan area for a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference matches.

The Miners will open their weekend of play Friday in St. Charles, Mo., taking on Lindenwood in a 7:30 p.m. contest, then will play a few miles closer to home on Sunday when they face 14th-ranked Maryville at 2:30 p.m.

After winning five straight games, including four straight to begin GLVC play, the Miners have come away without a win in each of their last two games.  Rockhurst ended S&T's winning streak on Sept. 26, but the Miners did pick up a point with a scoreless tie in their most recent outing Sunday at Drury, putting them at 5-2-1 overall and 4-1-1 (13 points) in conference play.  S&T is currently tied with three other teams for third place in the league standings with the 13 points.

Miner goalkeeper Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central) picked up his third shutout of the season Sunday, making three saves along the way to lower his goals against average for the season to 0.95 that currently ranks fifth in the conference.  Joseph has made 17 saves in his 380 minutes of playing time, while Michael Sallee (Springfield, MO/Catholic) has 19 saves in 379-plus minutes with a 1.66 goals against mark.

Sigurd Semlitsch (Oslo, Norway/Stabekk Videregaaende Skole) continues to lead the Miners in scoring with two goals and two assists for six points, while Luan Barbosa (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio SESI) has also scored twice for the Miners this season.  Leyton Harper (Andover, KS/Central) has a goal and two assists for four points as the Miners have had nine different players score goals this season and four others who have at least recorded an assist.

ABOUT LINDENWOOD: The Lions come into Friday's contest at 4-4 overall and 4-3 in the GLVC and are coming off their most impressive outing of the season, as they went into Rockhurst and handed the Hawks a 3-0 loss on Sunday.  Lindenwood got goals from Joshua Scholl and Cooper Wilson in the first 18 minutes of play as it extended its winning streak to four.

Scholl has two goals on the season as does Feho Sabotic, who has a team-high five points with an assist to go along with his two tallies.  Santiago Rodriguez has a goal and two assists as the Lions, just like S&T, have had nine different players score goals this season.

Zachary Martin has handled the bulk of the goalkeeping duties and has a 0.92 goals against average in 585 minutes of action with 22 saves.  Martin has played in goal during all four games of the current Lion winning streak and has allowed just one goal in that span.

ABOUT MARYVILLE: The Saints come into the game holding the No. 14 ranking in NCAA Division II in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll and appears to have righted their ship after a couple of early season yips with shutouts in each of their last three games.  Maryville got an overtime goal Sunday from Cedrick Sengl in the second minute of overtime to win 1-0 at Southwest Baptist to improve to 7-2-1 and 5-2 in the GLVC.

Mirza Hasecic leads the Saints with five goals and an assist for 11 points as he is tied for third in the GLVC in goals scored.  No other Saints player has scored more than a goal, but Richard Andrade has a team-high three assists.  Liam Walraven and Nick Hemann have shared the goalkeeping duties; Hemann has a 0.60 goals against average in 451 minutes and Walraven owns a 0.96 goals against mark in 469 minutes of play.

Hemann's goals against average currently leads the GLVC.
