Miners complete regular season schedule at home this weekend

10/27/2021 1:00:00 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – Still mathematically alive for a spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team will wrap up its home schedule this weekend with a pair of games against teams that as of today are currently in the tournament field.

The Miners will open their weekend by hosting Illinois Springfield Friday at 7:30 p.m., then close the regular season schedule Sunday with a visit from Lewis.  Missouri S&T's seniors will be honored prior to the start of Sunday's 2:30 p.m. contest.

S&T sits at 4-6-2 in GLVC play (5-7-2 overall) for a total of 14 points, or 1.17 per game heading into the final weekend as the GLVC will use points per game to determine its eight playoff participants due to teams being unable to play their complete conference schedules.  If the Miners win both games, they will increase their point average to 1.33 and can pass either Lindenwood or Missouri-St. Louis if either team loses both of its games this week and Quincy, if the Hawks' final average falls below 1.33.

Quincy has two games remaining on its schedule, plus a potential make-up game with William Jewell that was called at halftime on Sunday due to weather and must be replayed by Sunday.

As for the Miners, S&T was able to gain a tie at Southern Indiana on Sunday after Gabriel Ontiveros (Bartlesville, OK/Bartlesville) scored in the 90th minute of play to overcome a late two-goal outburst by USI late in the second half that gave the Screaming Eagles the lead.  The goal was the first for Ontiveros in his S&T career.

The Miners also got goals from Julien Denis (Olathe, KS/Olathe East) – 51 seconds into the game – and Dario Rossell (Madrid, Spain/IES Lazaro Cardenas) as they tallied their second goals of the season.  Luan Barbosa (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio SESI) continues to lead S&T in scoring with three goals on the year, while Sigurd Semlistch has two goals and two assists for six points.

Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central) has seen the majority of playing time in goal and has a 1.81 goals against average in 795 minutes, while Michael Sallee (Springfield, MO/Catholic) has a 1.72 mark in 524 minutes of play.

ABOUT ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD: Based on the points-per-game being used to determine the playoff participants, the Prairie Stars are currently in second place in the GLVC standings with 2.55 points per game on their record of 9-1-1 in league play.  The only blemishes on the conference record for UIS, who is 10-3-1 overall, was a loss to McKendree and a tie with Quincy; the Prairie Stars' game with league leader Indianapolis was cancelled.

Browel Some leads UIS in scoring with four goals and four assists for 12 points while Conal Gallagher, named as the GLVC's Offensive Player of the Week, leads the team with five goals and has scored in each of UIS' last three games.  Lars Brinkman has also scored four times for the Prairie Stars this season.

Pijus Petkevicius has played all 1,280 minutes in goal this season and has a 0.98 goals against average with 39 saves in that span.

ABOUT LEWIS: The Flyers, 9-3-3 overall and 7-3-2 in the GLVC (23 points, 1.92 per game) are in a battle with Drury for the fourth seed in the GLVC Tournament, which would make that team the host for a first-round game on Nov. 7.  Lewis plays at Maryville – who is currently third in the GLVC – Friday before facing the Miners, while Drury has home games with Quincy and Illinois Springfield this weekend.

Domenic Baumann is tied for fourth in the GLVC with seven goals and his 16 points are tied for third in the conference.  Meanwhile, Jimmy Mwanga is tied for second in the conference in assists with seven and also has three goals, while Aris Oluwatuyi has three goals and four assists.

Goalkeeper Sebastian Doppelhofer has made 50 saves in 1,291 minutes and has posted a 0.91 goals against average, the fourth-best mark in the GLVC.
