ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T opened its swimming season Friday evening with the best performances in all 11 events and took a 142-60 decision over Delta State at the S&T Pool.
The Miners, ranked 15
th in the College Swimming Coaches Association of America's pre-season rankings, opened with a win in the 400-yard medley relay from the team of
Noah Clancy (Alton, IL/Alton), Josh Umrysh,
Nate Baxter (St. Charles, IL/St. Charles North) and
Gabriel Asevedo (Singapore/Canadian International School) in a time of 3:24.57 and never looked back.
Asevedo would pick up two more wins on an individual basis later in the meet, winning the 50-yard freestyle in 21.58 seconds and the 100-freestyle in 47.26 seconds, while
Andy Huffman (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit) also won two events as he captured the 200-yard individual medley in 1:57.01 and posted the fastest time in the 200-yard breaststroke of 2:09.57.
Baxter got an individual win of his own in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:54.22 as did Clancy in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:54.49. S&T would also get wins from
Martin Melinder (Upplands Vasby, Sweden) in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:51.79,
Aidan Walters (Olathe, KS/Olathe East) in the 200-freestyle in 1:45.14 and
Marcelo Busch (Sao Centrano Do Sui-Sp, Brazil/Colegio Ateneu) in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:45.84.
The Miners' 400-yard freestyle relay team of
Connor Wiedemeier (West Monroe, LA/West Monroe),
Nolan Fergus (Aurora, IL/Marmion Academy), Clancy and Baxter also won that event with a time of 3:10.01.
Alex Graham (Parker, TX/Homeschooled) had a second place showing in the 1,000-freestyle in 9:57.93, as did Busch in the 200-free in 1:45.22, Fergus in the 50-freestyle in 21.73,
Jay Mercer (Kansas City, MO/Whitefield Academy) in the 200-IM in 1:57.09,
Alec Davis (Joplin, MO/Joplin) in the 100-free in 47.70 seconds, Walters in the 200-backstroke in 1:56.31, Melinder in the 500-freestyle in 4:49.89.
Third place finishes were recorded by
Sam Weber (Portage, MI/Portage Central) in the 1,000-freestyle in 10:02.19, Wiedemeier in the 200-freestyle in 1:45.36 and 100-freestyle in 47.77 seconds,
Chris Sprenger (Shawnee, KS/Mill Valley) in the 200-IM in 1:59.23 and 200-breaststroke in 2:11.30, Huffman in the 200-butterfly in 1:57.25,
Mark Cavanaugh (Papillion, NE/Papillion-LaVista) in the 200-backstroke in 1:58.07, Graham in the 500-freestyle in 4:55.19.
The Miners will compete again on Saturday, taking part in a double dual meet at McKendree that will also include Delta State. The meet will get underway at 11 a.m.
