ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team heads to the road for the final time in the 2021 regular season this weekend with a pair of games in the state of Indiana, beginning with a matchup Friday against the second-ranked team in NCAA Division II.
The Miners, 5-6-1 overall and 4-5-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, will face No. 2-ranked Indianapolis Friday at 7:30 p.m. (Eastern time) at Key Stadium before playing their final road contest Sunday at Southern Indiana at 2:30 p.m. The Miners enter the week with 13 points in the GLVC standings and are three points in back of Missouri-St. Louis, who currently holds the eighth and final playoff spot.
S&T had gone four games without a goal before getting tallies in both of its weekend contests, but both ended with heartbreaking overtime 2-1 losses to McKendree and Missouri-St. Louis.
Luan Barbosa (Curitiba, Brazil/Colegio SESI) scored the Miner goal on a penalty kick in the McKendree contest, then
Nicholas Sikora (Highland, IL/Highland) tallied his first goal of the year when he scored in the opening half Sunday against UMSL.
Barbosa leads the Miners with three goals on the year and is tied with
Sigurd Semlitsch (Oslo, Norway/Stabekk Videregaaende Skole) for the lead in points with six; Semlitsch has two goals and a pair of assists.
Leyton Harper (Andover, KS/Central) is tied for the team lead in assists with two and is among 10 Miners who have scored goals this season.
Goalkeepers
Michael Sallee (Springfield, MO/Catholic) and
Davis Joseph (Andover, KS/Andover Central) have split the duties in goal this season, with Joseph owning a 1.30 goals against average with 32 saves in 622 minutes and Sallee holding a 1.72 goals against mark and 24 saves in 524 minutes.
ABOUT INDIANAPOLIS: The Greyhounds won their fifth straight game Sunday with a 3-0 victory at Rockhurst and improved to 10-0-1 overall and 8-0-1 in the GLVC as a result. The only blemish on UIndy's record is a 1-1 tie against Lewis on Sept. 24, as it has outscored its 11 opponents by a 29-8 margin.
Alejandro Steinwascher leads the Greyhounds with eight goals and five assists on the year, while Dylan Bollard has four goals and Bryan Moriera and Cole Rainwater have three goals apiece. Ten different players have scored goals for the Greyhounds this season and eight of those 10 have scored at least twice.
Dimitrios Karausos has seen the majority of the playing time in goal for UIndy and has a 0.72 goals against average, the second-best mark in the GLVC.
ABOUT SOUTHERN INDIANA: The Screaming Eagles have dropped their last three matches and are 5-7 overall and 4-6 (12 points) in the GLVC heading into their Friday contest with Maryville prior to the Miners' visit on Sunday. USI lost 3-1 at Drury last week before dropping a 1-0 decision at Southwest Baptist Sunday, as the Bearcats scored in the 83
rd minute to decide the game.
Zach Barton and Zach Schoenstein share the team lead in goals with six each, but only four other USI players have scored goals this season and only one of them has more than one; Graham Miller has scored twice with two assists. Brian Winkler leads the conference with his nine assists.
Justin Faas has played 999 minutes in goal and has posted a 1.71 goals against average with 48 saves.
