ROLLA, Mo. – A matchup of two teams ranked among the top 15 in NCAA Division II swimming went in favor of Missouri S&T Friday afternoon, as the 14
th-ranked Miners captured a 110-94 decision over eighth-ranked McKendree at the S&T Pool.
McKendree had more first place finishes in the meet with six to the Miners' five, but S&T had a pair of one-two finishes, seven third place showings and also has third place teams in both relays as the teams split wins in those two multi-competitor events.
The Miners' five wins were highlighted by three from
Andy Huffman (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit), as he took first in the 200-yard individual medley with a strong finish in posting a time of 1:56.42 and followed the first break in the action with a win in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:56.22. Huffman's third win came in the next-to-last event when he won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:06.30.
Noah Clancy (Alton, IL/Alton) also had a winning performance in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:55.83 and led off S&T's 400-yard medley relay win as he teamed up with
Marco Flores (San Pedro Sula, Honduras/SERAN Private Bilingual School),
Nolan Fergus (Aurora, IL/Marmion Academy) and
Gabriel Asevedo (Singapore/Canadian International School) to post the win by nearly four seconds in a time of 3:25.77.
Second place finishes came courtesy of
Connor Wiedemeier (West Monroe, LA/West Monroe) in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:44.50. Flores in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.72 seconds,
Nate Baxter (St. Charles, IL/St. Charles North) in the 200-butterfly in 1:56.58,
Alec Davis (Joplin, MO/Joplin) in the 100-yard freestyle in 47.38 seconds,
Aidan Walters (Olathe, KS/Olathe East) in the 200-backstroke in 1:56.91.
The team of Wiedemeier, Davis, Asevedo and Flores also grabbed second in the 400-freestyle relay as it finished with a mark of 3:08.39.
Martin Melinder (Upplands Vasby, Sweden/) finished third in the 1,000-freestyle in 9:56.55 as did Davis in the 200-freestyle in 1:44.97, Fergus in the 50-freestyle in 21.90 seconds,
Jay Mercer (Kansas City, MO/Whitefield Academy) in the 200-IM in 1:57.73, Asevedo in the 100-free in 47.60 seconds,
Marcelo Busch (Sao Centrano Do Sui-Sp, Brazil/Colegio Ateneu) in the 500-freestyle in 4:47.64 and
Chris Sprenger (Shawnee, KS/Mill Valley) in the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:09.87.
McKendree's six event wins were highlighted by a pair of wins by Xander Skinner and Fabio Dalu, who broke the pool record in the 1,000-yard freestyle by nearly three seconds with his time of 9:22.35.
Missouri S&T has one dual meet remaining on its schedule prior to the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships, which will take place Jan. 22 against Drury at the S&T Pool.
