ROLLA, Mo. – For the second time in his career, MissourI S&T swimmer Tim Samuelsen (Stavanger, Norway/St. Svithun VGS) has earned Academic All-America honors as that team was announced today by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Samuelsen, a mechanical engineering major who earned his bachelor's degree from Missouri S&T in May, was named to the first team on the Academic All-America at-large squad, which covers all of the sports that do not have their own Academic All-America teams.  He was a second-team Academic All-America selection following the 2017-18 season.

On the previous occasion that Samuelsen was named as an Academic All-America, it came following a year in which he won a pair of NCAA Division II championships in the 1,000- and 1,650-yard freestyle.  He set the school record in those events in the process of winning those national titles and would later earn Academic All-America honors.

During his Miner career, Samuelsen earned nine All-America awards as he also finished as the national runner-up in the 1,650-freestyle in 2019 and added a fifth place showing in the 1,000-yard freestyle at that meet.  In addition, Samuelsen placed seventh in the 500-yard freestyle and 200-yard butterfly in 2018.

Samuelsen also captured back-to-back GLVC championships in the 1,650-freestyle, winning the 2018 race in a then-conference record time of 15:20.15 and repeating in 2019 in a time of 15:21.53.  In the process of capturing his second title, he became the first and still only individual to win consecutive 1,650-freestyle championships in the GLVC.

He owns the four fastest times in program history in the 1,000-yard freestyle, led by his mark of 8:59.45 at the 2018 national meet and the five fastest marks in the 1,650-freestyle; his top time there that was also set in 2018 was 15:08.53 that allowed him to win that national title.

Samuelsen was one of five swimmers named to the Academic All-America first team and 11 on the three-team squad, while also being one of five first team selections from the Great Lakes Valley Conference; GLVC institutions had eight individuals named to one of the three teams.

The selection of Samuelsen to the Academic All-America team is the second for a Missouri S&T student-athlete for the 2019-20 school year – Deshawn Jones was named to the football team in the fall -- and 103rd in S&T program history.   S&T has the fifth-highest total of Academic All-America selections in NCAA Division II.   The award was also the 18th given to a member of the S&T swimming program.
