ROLLA, MO- After being on the road for the last three games, the Miners will come back home for a pair this weekend against McKendree University on Thursday night and Southern Indiana on Saturday afternoon.
The Miners losing skid was extended this past weekend after facing losses to top-ranked Drury and most recently, a heartbreaking loss to the Bearcats of Southwest Baptist on Saturday afternoon.
S&T played dead-even with SBU though the first three quarters, but Southwest Baptist's late offensive surge put them just out of reach of the Miners.
Twice the Miners got within four of the Bearcats in the final five minutes of the game;
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) found an opening in the paint for an easy lay-up with 4:51 remaining. Forty-eight seconds later,
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) drained a shot from the elbow to make it a 66-62 game. Kerr's basket would be the last by S&T as SBU went on to sink three late free-throws to secure the 74-62 win.
For the season,
Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) leads the team with 12.1 points/game while
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy),
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern), and
Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay) are all chipping in double-digit scoring. On the boards, Baylor has been leading the pack with 10.1/game. She is currently leading the GLVC with 11 double-doubles this season.
About McKendree:
The Bearcats (10-10, 3-9 GLVC) are currently on a three game losing skid after falling to the Tritons of Missouri-St. Louis this past Saturday.
After hanging with the Tritons through the first half and looking at just a six point deficit going into the break, UMSL used a monster scoring third quarter to extend their lead out to as much as 18. Along with their scoring run, the Tritons also held McKendree to just 24 second half points, 10 of them in the final 10 minutes of the game.
Madison Hart and Callie Pohlman led the way for McKendree with 13 and 11 points, respectively while Shayli Florine dished out a team best four assists.
For the season, Jordan Heberg leads the scoring efforts for the Bearcats with 13.8/game while Jenna Krause is chipping in 10.8 per contest. Madison Hart has been McKendree's biggest benefactor on the boards with 185 rebounds for the season and an average of 9.7/game.
Historically, the Miners have matched up well against the Bearcats leading the all-time record of 10-4. But, S&T hasn't seen a win over McKendree since the 2016-2017 season when the Miners used a late scoring push to edge past the Bearcats for the 74-66 win.
Last season when the two teams met, the Miners were held to just six fourth quarter points as McKendree went on to take the 76-63 win.
About Southern Indiana:
The Screaming Eagles (12-6, 8-4 GLVC) come into the weekend off an 81-68 win over the Lions of Lindenwood University. Four players scored in double figures with Ashley Johnson leading the way with 22 points on 7-14 shooting and a perfect 6-6 from the free-throw line.
USI and Lindenwood traded baskets for the first 15 minutes of the game before the Screaming Eagles took the lead after Emma DeHart hit a jump-shot from the wing to give them a 24-22 lead. From there, Southern Indiana would never trail as they got 12 made free-throws in the final five minutes of the game to secure their 81-68 win.
For the season, Ashley Johnson is leading the way with just over 14 points per game while shooting 35% from beyond the arc. Emma DeHart and Hannah Haithcock are chipping in 11.2 and 10.3, respectively, while Ashlynn Brown is bringing down a team best 5.7 rebounds.
Missouri S&T leads the all-time series over the Screaming Eagles 13-7 with the last S&T win coming back in the 2015-2016 season here in Rolla. The last three match-ups have been in Evansville and have seen USI take all three wins.
Last season when USI and S&T met up, scoring droughts in the second and third quarter proved to be the Miners downfall as the Screaming Eagles outscored the Miners 43-26 over the 20 minute span.
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) led the way with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds while
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) chipped in 11 points.
Southern Indiana will play in St. Louis against the Saints of Maryville University before facing off against the Miners on Saturday afternoon.
