Miners Take on Hawks, Bulldogs in Final Games of Season

2/25/2020 2:06:00 PM

ROLLA, MO- The Miners will conclude the 2019-2020 season this weekend when they play host to the Hawks of Quincy University on Thursday night and the Bulldogs of Truman State on Saturday afternoon.

S&T is currently on a 10 game losing streak that was extended this past weekend when the Greyhounds of Indianapolis came storming back in the second half to threaten the Miners lead.

After taking a 16-point lead just before halftime, UIndy opened the 3rd quarter on an 11-2 run to get within 10 of the Miners. They would score on five consecutive trips down the floor to take their first lead of the game since the opening quarter of play. The duo of Laura Thomas and Marissa Knobloch drained a combined five three-pointers in the third to put S&T down 70-61 heading into the final 10 minutes.

It was all Indianapolis in the final stanza of play, holding the Miners to less than 30% from the field. A lay-up from UIndy's Paige Barrett at the end of the game would give the Greyhounds their largest lead of the game, and eventually hand the Miners the 90-75 loss.

Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) led the way for the Miners offensively, scoring a team-high 15 points on 6-9 shooting. Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic) , Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township), and Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) all reached double-digits in scoring while Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay) led the way with a game-high 10 rebounds.

For the season, Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) leads the team with 12.5 points/game with Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay) right behind her with 12.1 points and a team-best 10.6 rebounds per contest. Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) and Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) are both averaging double figures with 11 and 10 points/game, respectively. Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) has also been a big threat on the offensive end, dishing out 84 assists so far.

About Quincy:
The Hawks (7-19, 3-15 GLVC) are currently on a six game losing streak that was extended this past weekend when they faced off against the top-ranked Panthers of Drury University. Quincy faced the 112-63 loss.

Drury's explosive offense overpowered the Hawks in every quarter while also forcing Quincy into 39 turnovers. Laney Lantz and Alexa Low led the way for QU on Saturday recording 16 and 12 points, respectively, while Ella Gobald led the way with six rebounds and Amanda Porth dished out six assists off the bench.

For the season, Laney Lantz leads the team with 10.9 points/game while Alex Low and Aleksandra Petrovic are adding in 10.8 and 10.3 points per contest. Low is also leading the team with just over six rebounds/game.

Historically, the Miners have matched up well against the Hawks, leading the all-time series 20-17. S&T has claimed two of the last three match-ups with their last win coming earlier this season in Quincy.

After the Miners took a commanding 40-27 lead heading into halftime, Quincy would attempt a comeback to threaten S&T's lead, but, four made three-pointers from Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) and Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic) going 15-16 from the free-throw line would help to secure the Miners 91-76 win.

About Truman State:
The Bulldogs (18-7, 14-4 GLVC) find themselves in 4th place in the PRS standings within the GLVC coming into the final weekend of regular season. Truman State picked up an 80-66 win over the Bearcats of Southwest Baptist last Saturday to stay in the top-four within the conference.

TSU used a dominate 25-8 second quarter to down SBU on Saturday, never having their lead threatened through the remainder of the game.

Hannah Belanger led the way with a game-high 24 points on 8-15 shooting while Katey Klucking and Tiffany Davenport added in 14 and 11 off the bench, respectively. Katie Jaseckas also reached double figures, grabbing 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs.

For the season, Katie Jaseckas leads the way in points and rebounds for the Bulldogs, averaging 13.2 points and 6.6 rebounds/game. Sloane Totta and Hannah Belanger are also adding in double figure scoring for TSU with 12.8 and 12.4 points/game, respectively.

Last time the Miners and Bulldogs met was earlier this season when S&T made the trip up to Kirksville. Missouri S&T's offense went cold in the first and third quarters that allowed Truman State to gain a fairly hefty lead.

After getting down by as much as 28 in the 4th quarter, the Miners outscored the Bulldogs 12-6 in the final minutes of the game to cut their deficit back to 16. It would be too late for S&T to make a run at TSU's lead as they suffered the 87-71 loss.

The Bulldogs will take on the Saints of Maryville University on Thursday night before coming to Rolla on Saturday afternoon.
