ROLLA, MO- The Miners concluded their travel schedule for the 2019-2020 season this past weekend and will come home for their remaining GLVC schedule. This weekend, S&T will host the Lady Knight of Bellarmine University on Thursday night and the Greyhounds of Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon.
This past weekend, the Miners faced two heartbreaking road losses to put them at 3-13 in the GLVC standings.
Playing short-handed on Saturday, the Miners held their own with the Flyers of Lewis University, cutting their deficit to as little as eight late in the fourth quarter.
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern), who scored her 1,000
th point as a Miner on Thursday night, drained a three-pointer from the corner with 48 seconds left on the clock to put S&T down 71-63. After a Flyers turnover, the Miners gave themselves a prime opportunity to get within striking distance of Lewis. The Miners would not be able to get their comeback and would face the 71-63 loss.
For the season,
Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) leads the team with 12.6 points/game while
Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay) is adding in 12.3 points and 10.7 rebounds per contest.
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) and
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) are also adding in double-digit scoring with 11.2 and 10.1, respectively.
About Bellarmine:
The Lady Knights (14-9, 9-7 GLVC) are currently on a three-game winning streak that was extended this past weekend after Bellarmine took down Truman State and Quincy University in Louisville.
Bellarmine used a big offensive push in the second quarter of Saturday's game against Quincy to extend their lead out to double-digits before the break. While the Hawks made a run to threaten the Lady Knights lead, BU held on for the 64-57 lead.
For the season, Bria Torres leads the team with just over 13 points/game while Tasia Jefferies is adding in 10 points. Mallory Schwartz has been the biggest threat on the boards for Bellarmine, bringing down a team-best 6.4 rebounds/contest.
Historically, the Miners have matched up well against the Lady Knight in the past, getting within 10 of Bellarmine in the last three games.
Last season when the two teams met,
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) had a career game with 25 points and helped the Miners come back from a 29-point deficit. After being held to just 26 first half points, S&T used a 33-point fourth quarter to get within 10 of the Lady Knights. The combo of Durk and
Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay) picking up a double-double helped give the Miners the push they needed, despite the 85-75 loss.
About Indianapolis:
The Greyhounds (17-7, 10-6 GLVC) have done a complete 180 degree turnaround from last season.
UIndy faced a 69-53 loss to Truman State this past weekend despite a 21-point performance from Laura Thomas.
The Bulldogs used a dominating first half that put the Greyhounds down 36-19 at the break. That deficit would prove to be too much for UIndy to come back from and would face the 16 point loss to TSU.
For the season, Laura Thomas leads the team in scoring, averaging just under 16 points/game. Dasia Evans and McKenzy Telfair are adding in 12.6 and 10 points/game, respectively, while Emma Beniot is bringing down a team-best 7.2 rebounds per contest.
Last season when the Greyhounds and Miners met, S&T dominated the second half of the game, outscoring UIndy 47-27 behind double-figure scoring from
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern),
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy), and
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township).
The Greyhounds will take on the Saints of Maryville University on Thursday night before coming to Gibson Arena on Saturday afternoon.
