Miners Head to Lindenwood Before Hosting Southwest Baptist on Saturday

12/8/2020 12:00:00 PM

ROLLA, MO- The Miners look to start the new week off on the right foot after dropping two heartbreaking games last week.

After falling to the Bearcats in the team's home opener, S&T looked to redeem themselves heading into their game against the Hawks of Rockhurst. After holding on to the lead for more than three-fourths of the game, the Miners could smell victory.

But, the Hawks Monika Faerber and Daly Sullivan lit Rockhurst's offense in the fourth quarter and took the 62-59 win.

Despite the losses, the Miners have multiple players who are making a name for themselves; senior guard Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) recorded 11 assists over the two games while junior Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) averaged 10.5 points/game and 12.0 rebounds over the 80 minutes of play. Sophomore Kristen Keys (St. Louis, MO/Westminster Christian Academy) has been a big contributing factor for the Miners, averaging 15.0 points last week and went a team best 5-11 from long range, including scoring the team's first 11 points in their game against McKendree.

S&T faces two more tough match-ups this week in Lindenwood and Southwest Baptist. The Miners will head to St. Charles on Thursday night before wrapping up their 2020 home schedule on Saturday against the Bearcats.

Lindenwood
The Lions (1-2, 1-2 GLVC) picked up their first win of the season at Quincy on Saturday with a 67-41 win. The Hawks opened the game with a quick lay-up, but a short jumpshot from Hennessey Handy would just 55 seconds into the game would give Lindenwood the lead, which they never surrendered for the rest of the game.

Lindenwood currently has three players averaging double figures; Julia Ruzevich leads the way with 23.0 points/game while Handy and Devin Fuhring are chipping in 11.0 and 10.0, respectively. Ruzevich is also leading the charge for the Lions with 13.7 rebounds/game.

The last time the Miners and the Lions met, Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) went 7-11 from the field for a team-best 15 points while Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay) led the way for S&T with 13 rebounds.

S&T hung with the Lions last season, heading into halftime looking at a 34-29 deficit. But, the Lions would get a show from Ruzevich, Fuhring, and Lindsay Medlin, all of them combining for Lindenwood's 22-point quarter to take the 73-60 win.

The Miners have not recorded a win against Lindenwood since they joined the GLVC last season and have not had a win in Hyland Arena since the 1982-83 season.

Southwest Baptist
The Bearcats (0-1, 0-1 GLVC) opened up their season last Thursday against nationally ranked Drury University in the coveted Highway 13 Catfight. While SBU held their own in the opening quarter, the Panthers of Drury would open up shop in the second quarter, holding Southwest Baptist to just 12 points on 3-11 shooting.

Round one of the Highway 13 Catfight went to the Panthers behind an 18 point performance from DU's Paige Robinson and Azia Lynch.

SBU was led by Megan Worthington who came off the bench for a team-high 13 points while going 4-6 from the field. Brodi Byrd and Brylee Graddy added in 12 and 10 points, respectively.

The Miners and the Bearcats go way back to the MIAA days, meeting 59 times before Saturday's match-up. S&T is currently on a 19 game losing streak against SBU after dropping both meetings against them last season.
In the team's game back in February, Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) took charge for the Miners, going 7-10 from the field and a perfect 3-3 from the charity stripe for a team-high 17 points and 10 rebounds.

S&T found themselves in a hole early in the game, going into the second quarter down 22-16. The Miners would fight to climb out of the hole, but the Bearcats offense could not be stopped as four SBU players scored in double figures to take the 74-62 win.
