S&T Wraps Up 2020 Slate at Drury, William Jewell

12/16/2020 2:09:00 PM

ROLLA, MO- The Miners (1-4, 1-4 GLVC) will wrap up the rest of their 2020 season on the road this weekend at top-ranked Drury University on Friday night and at William Jewell on Sunday afternoon.

S&T is coming off an exciting win over Southwest Baptist this past Saturday; the win marks not just the team's first win of the season, but the first win for Kira Carter as a head coach.

S&T's shooting caught fire in the final 10 minutes of the game, shooting just under 53% from the field and going 3-5 from long range.

The Miners got their largest lead of the night on an 18-9 run to open the quarter that was capped with another three-pointer from Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township). The 72-60 lead would be enough to hold the Bearcats for the rest of the game, never getting back within five points of the Miners.

Kristen Keys (St. Louis, MO/Westminster Christian Academy) and Ashley Harvey sealed the deal for the Miners with consecutive baskets in the last minute of play to take the 79-68 win.

Currently, the Miners have four players scoring in double figures. Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) leads the way with 15.2 points/game while adding in 10.6 rebounds; Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) is right behind her with 14.4 points/game with Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) and Kristen Keys (St. Louis, MO/Westminster Christian Academy) coming in with 11.0 and 10.8, respectively.

Drury
The Panthers (5-0, 5-0 GLVC), who are nationally ranked #1 by D2SIDA, come into Friday's game as the only other non-beaten GLVC school after barely scooting by Rockhurst with a 76-64 win.

After finding themselves tied with the Hawks at 60-60 with 4:49 remaining in the game, Emily Parker put the Panthers back on top with a pair of free-throws that would start an 18-4 run for Drury. That run would be enough to sneak past Rockhurst for their 37th straight win, dating back through last season.

Paige Robinson is currently leading the Panthers with 23.2 points and 7.8 rebounds/game while Azia Lynch and Emily Parker are adding in 13.8 and 11.7 points, respectively.

Along with Robinson, Lynch, and Parker, Drury returns other big names from last season including Payton Richards and Kelsey Winfred while welcoming senior transfer Katie Kirkhart from Oral Roberts University, who is currently 6th on the team in scoring and 3rd on the team with 24 total rebounds.

The Miners and the Panthers have a lengthy history dating back to the 70's. However, Drury holds the record for wins over S&T at 29-6 and have taken the last 15 matchups.

Last season when the two teams met, the Panthers jumped out early, taking a 32-12 lead after the first quarter. While S&T's offense picked up in the second quarter, Drury's offense kept going, scoring 34 points in the second and a combined 50 points in the second half to take the 116-68 win over the Miners.

Four S&T players scored in double digits; Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) led the way with 17 points while going 6-10 from the field while Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) chipped in 16 points on 7-10 shooting. Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) and Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) added in 11 each.

William Jewell
The Cardinals (1-3, 1-3 GLVC) are coming off an 81-58 loss to the Panthers of Drury University. While Jewell was able to hold top-ranked Drury to just 13 first quarter points, the explosive offense of the Panthers could not be tamed for long.

A 26-point second quarter put the Cardinals down 39-27 heading into halftime and would see their deficit get to as much as 23 late in the fourth quarter.

Despite their defensive woes, Jewell has three players score in double digits; Lea Finn led the way with 12 points and four steals while Kiara Bradley and Ainsley Tolson added in 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Jewell welcomed back three of their top players from last season; the Cardinals leading scorer from last year, Kiara Bradley, is back and picking up where she left off. Bradley currently leads the team with 21.0 points/game and just over nine rebounds while Ainsley Tolson is chipping in 10.3 points and leading the team with 18 assists. Sydney Offield, who led the Cardinals in assists last season, is back and adding in 5.5 points and 5.5 rebounds/game.

The Miners have seen success against the Cardinals in the past, winning 11 of the 21 total matchups, but not seeing much triumph over the past few seasons. Jewell has won the last four meetings with the last game going down to the wire.

While four Miners scoring combined for 57 of the teams 82 points, Jewell outscored S&T 15-8 in the final five minutes of the game to take the 88-82 win.

William Jewell will host the Bearcats of Southwest Baptist on Friday before welcoming the Miners on Sunday afternoon.
