Green wins high scoring third game to take Green & Gold World Series

10/31/2020 10:41:00 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's Green team took advantage of a ragged stretch in the field by the Gold team in the sixth inning Saturday afternoon, scoring seven times in the frame as it then held on for a 13-10 win to capture the Green & Gold World Series at the S&T Ballpark.

The Gold team committed four errors in the sixth, opening the door for the seven-run outburst by the Green as it turned a 5-4 deficit into a lead it would not relinquish to win the series two games to one.

The inning began when pinch-hitter Evan Crawford (Bettendorf, IA/Pleasant Valley) reached on an error, then ended up at third moments later on another error when a ball was thrown wide of the second baseman on a force out effort.  Crawford scored to tie the game following a hit by Brady Voss (Lake St. Louis, MO/Liberty), which was followed by another error on a bunt by Doug Wood (Liberty, MO/Liberty North) to load the bases.

Michael Ward (Hazelwood, MO/Hazelwood West) drew a walk to force in the go-ahead run and Garrett Weiner (Alton, IL/Marquette) was hit by a pitch to bring another run across the plate.  Tate Morrell (Lloydminster, AB/) followed with a hit to drive in two more runs, then the Green scored its final two runs of the inning on an RBI single by Cole Hampton (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Crawford in his second at-bat in the sixth.

The Gold drew a run closer in the bottom of the sixth when Aaron Berkhoff (Colorado Springs, CO/Cheyenne Mountain) singled in Chase Burgess (Overland Park, KS/Blue Valley West), but the Green tacked on two more runs in the eighth on Voss' fourth hit of the game, a single that scored Hampton and Michael Hughes (St. Clair, MO/St. Clair).

However, the Gold team would not go away quietly.  With two outs in the eighth, Berkhoff singled and scored on a triple by Landon Bell (Seymour, MO/Seymour); Bell crossed the plate moments later on a wild pitch.  Then after the first two hitters were retired in the bottom of the ninth, the Gold staged a late comeback effort with four straight hits to score two runs – driven in by Burgess and Jaden Courtois (Festus, MO/Jefferson) – before reliever Eli Gross got Berkhoff on a ground ball to second to end the game.

The Green team opened the scoring in the second when Hampton reached on an error and later scored on a hit by Voss, but the Gold side evened the score in the bottom without the benefit of a hit, as Dakota Sill (Lansing, KS/Lansing) walked and stole second, moved to third on a wild pickoff throw and came home on a wild pitch.

The Gold scored another run without a hit in the third when Berkhoff was hit by a pitch to open the inning, then came around on an error, stolen base and a ground ball out by Bell.

In the fourth, the Green took the lead back when Hampton and Kyle Fowler got hits ahead of Voss, whose single through the hole past short brought in Hampton.  A wild throw to first on a potential inning-ending double play ball scored Fowler to give the Green a 3-2 lead.

Garrett Weiner (Alton, IL/Marquette) belted a home run to lead off the fifth to add to the Green advantage, but the Gold regained the lead in the bottom half of that inning on an RBI double by Bell, a bases loaded walk to Sill and an opposite field single by Christian Montes de Oca (El Paso, TX/Franklin).  A second runner was thrown out at the plate by Morrell – who had two outfield assists in the game – which preceded the Green's seven-run inning to follow.

The Gold outhit the Green 13-11 as Berkhoff had three hits to lead the way.  Besides Voss' four hits, Morrell, Hampton and Fowler all had two hits apiece for the Green.  Matthew Kaiser, the second of four pitchers used by the Green, was the winning pitcher.
