Miners dominant in season opening win over Delta State

ROLLA, Mo. – A dominant performance gave Missouri S&T's swimming team a season opening win Friday night, as the Miners posted the best time in all 11 events to come away with a 117-74 win over Delta State at the S&T Pool.

The Miners opened the evening by winning the 400-yard medley relay in 3:25.26 behind the team of Noah Clancy (Alton, IL/Alton), Josh Umrysh, Nate Baxter (St. Charles, IL/St. Charles North) and Gabriel Asevedo (Singapore/Canadian International School) and closed the meet with the best time in the 400-yard freestyle relay, as the quartet of Umrysh, Aidan Walters (Olathe, KS/Olathe East), Marcelo Busch (Sao Centrano Do Sui-Sp, Brazil/Colegio Ateneu) and Nolan Fergus (Aurora, IL/Marmion Academy) recorded a mark of 3:08.97.

In between the two relay wins, the Miners got a pair of first place showings from Connor Wiedemeier (West Monroe, LA/West Monroe), who won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:43.78 and later the 100-yard freestyle in 47.13 seconds and from Andy Huffman (Lee's Summit, MO/Lee's Summit), who won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:55.46 and had the best mark in the 200-yard breaststroke of 2:06.30.

The Miners also had first place showings from Martin Melinder (Upplands Vasby, Sweden) in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:46.17, Marco Flores (San Pedro Sula, Honduras/SERAN Private Bilingual School) in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.78 seconds, Fergus in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:55.06, Mark Cavanaugh (Papillion, NE/Papillion-LaVista) in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:54.08 and Busch in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:42.29

Alec Davis (Joplin, MO/Joplin) finished second in the 200-freestyle in 1:44.70 and the 100-freestyle in 47.78, as did Clancy in the 50-freestyle in 21.86 seconds, Baxter in the 200-IM in 1:55.50, Huffman in the 200-butterfly in 1:55.59, Walters in the 200-backstroke in 1:54.57, Melinder in the 500-freestyle in 4:42.38 and Jay Mercer (Kansas City, MO/Whitefield Academy) in the 200-breaststroke in 2:10.31.

Third place finishes were posted by Busch in the 1,000-freestyle in 9:54.42, Cole Akal (Alton, IL/Alton) in the 200-freestyle in 1:45.40, Chris Sprenger (Shawnee, KS/Mill Valley) in the 200-IM in the 1:56.19, Baxter in the 200-butterfly in 1:56.63, Asevedo in the 100-freestyle in 47.90 seconds and Daniel Matlock (Peoria, IL/Richwoods) in the 200-breaststroke in 2:10.62.

The Miners' next meet is scheduled to take place on Nov. 18 when they take part in the McKendree Invitational in Lebanon, Ill.
