ROLLA, MO- Missouri S&T's women's basketball team will look to redeem themselves this weekend when they continue their road GLVC slate at Truman State and Quincy this Thursday and Saturday.
The Miners are coming off back-to-back losses against Lindenwood and Missouri-St. Louis that dropped S&T to 5-5 overall and 1-2 in GLVC play.
In Saturday's game against the Tritons of UMSL, the Miners kept it close through the first three quarters, but the Tritons offensive surge in the fourth quarter proved to be S&T's undoing. The Miners were held to just 11 fourth quarter points and averaged just 27% from the field. UMSL sealed the deal at the end with four free-throws in the final two minutes of play to hand S&T the 67-56 loss.
For the season,
Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay) leads the team in both points and rebounds; the senior post player is posting 12.9 points and 11.5 rebounds/game and picked up her 8
th double-double (points-rebounds) of the season. She is first player to do so in the last decade.
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) and
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) have been two major offensive keys for the Miners averaging 11.9 and 11.1 points/contest, respectively while
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) and
Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic) have combined for 63 assists through the first 10 games of the season.
About Truman State:
The Bulldogs (7-3, 3-0 GLVC) are riding a high after this weekend where they took down William Jewell and Rockhurst by an average of 24 points.
In Truman's win over Rockhurst, the Bulldogs used an explosive third quarter to extend their lead out to double-digits. TSU opened the second half with a 15-4 run that gave them a 57-41 lead. While the Hawks would attempt a comeback, the Bulldogs hot offense along with their lockdown defense would push their lead out to as much as 23 before the quarter was over.
The damage from the third quarter was enough to cruise to a win in the fourth with Truman not letting Rockhurst get anywhere near them. Hannah Pinkston hammered the final nail in the coffin with 55 seconds left in the game with a fast break lay-up to solidify the 91-70 win.
For the season, TSU's Sloane Totta leads the team with 11.9 points/game while Hannah Belanger (11.4), Katey Klucking (11.2), and Katie Jaseckas (10.1) are all averaging over 10 points/contest. While Maddie Re is right behind them with 8.9 points/game, she is grabbing a team best 9.8 rebounds/game.
Last season when the Miners and Bulldogs met, Truman State used a fourth quarter surge and crunch time free-throws from Brooke Bailey and Katie Jaseckas to hand the Miners the 74-65 loss.
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) and
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) led the offensive efforts for S&T with 14 points apiece while
Michaela Davis (Keokuk, Iowa/Keokuk) and
Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay) added in a combined 22 points.
About Quincy:
The Hawks (5-6, 1-2 GLVC) come into this weekend off a win against fellow GLVC foe, William Jewell.
Quincy struck in the second and third quarters, gaining their first lead of the game early in the third quarter off a three-pointer from Ella Gobald. From there, QU would gain as much as a nine point lead to help them head into the final quarter of play.
Six made free-throws in the final two minutes of the game secure the 59-47 win for the Hawks to get them their first GLVC win of the season.
For the season, Maddie Spagnola and Aleksandra Petrovic lead the way for the Hawks with 12.5 and 12.3 points/game, respectively, while Ella Gobald is adding in 10.1 per contest.
Last season when the Miners and Hawks met, S&T squeaked by with a 66-61 win behind double-digit performances from
Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay),
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township),
Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy), and
Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic). Kabetske came in clutch for S&T after sinking five free-throws in the final three minutes of the game to ice it.
