Miners Host Rockhurst Before Hitting the Road for Saturday Contest

1/21/2020 2:16:00 PM

ROLLA, MO- After completing a season sweep of Maryville University on Monday night, the Miners will continue GLVC play this weekend. They will host the Hawks of Rockhurst University on Thursday night before heading up to Kansas City for a showdown with William Jewell on Saturday afternoon.

Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay) led the charge for the Miners against the Saints on Monday night, scoring 17 points while grabbing a game-best, and career best, 17 rebounds. Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy), Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township), Tristen McFeders (Kansas City, Mo./Bishop Miege), and Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic) all chipped in double scoring while the duo of Durk and Kabetske went a combined 11-13 from the free-throw line late in the game. The 82-74 win in St. Louis was the first time since the Saints joined the GLVC that S&T picked up a win in the Simon Athletic Center.

Missouri S&T (7-8, 3-5 GLVC) has been led in scoring by the dynamic post duo of Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay) and Alex Kerr (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy); Baylor leads the team with 12.6 points/game while Kerr is second with 11.5 scored. They also lead the team with a combined 17.2 rebounds/contest and have 36 and 15 blocks recorded, respectively.

Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) and Laura Rodriguez (Gran Canaria, Spain/Baloncesto Torrelodones) are both also averaging double-digits in scoring. Raley, who is just 56 points away from scoring 1000 career points, comes into the weekend averaging 10.7/game while Rodriguez is right behind her adding just over 10.5.

About Rockhurst:
The Hawks (8-8, 2-6 GLVC) have struggled to find a rhythm this season as they come into the weekend on a three-game losing skid that was extended on Monday night when the Cardinals of William Jewell handed Rockhurst their 6th GLVC loss of the season.

After trading baskets with each other in the first half, Jewell's offense broke down the Hawks defense in the second half and was able to shoot 46% from the floor to just sneak by.

After Madeline Ronshausen drained back-to-back three-pointers, WJC would hold the Hawks scoreless for the remaining 45 seconds and outscore them 8-0 to take the 75-66 win.

For the season, Madeline Ronshausen has been the heart and soul of the Hawks offense with 16.8 points/game and shooting just over 40% from long range. She is also second on the team in rebounds/game, just behind Reagan Dodd who is bringing down a team best 4.4/contest.

Historically, the Miners have found great success over Rockhurst, coming into this weekend's game with a 22-9 overall record over the Hawks.

The last meeting between the two did not favor S&T, however; RU opened the game with a 25-12 first quarter and held the Miners shooting to just 28%. It would happen again in the fourth quarter as the Miners offense went cold, getting just 13 points from the field and suffering the 91-70 loss.

Depsite the loss, four S&T players reached double-figure scoring; Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) had a team-best 14 points while Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic), Mykala Baylor (South Bend, Ind./Clay), and Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) chipped in 12, 11, and 10, respectively.

About William Jewell:
The Cardinals (6-10, 2-6 GLVC) are riding high after they completed a season sweep of the Hawks on Monday night with a 75-66 win.

After trading baskets for the better part of the game, WJC got the defensive stops that they needed at the end of the game that transpired into points to claim the win.

Jewell got scoring from Sydney Offield, Kiara Bradley, and Macyn Wilbers in the last 30 seconds of the game that gave them a nine point edge over Rockhurst and their second GLVC win of the season. Bradley, who scored a team-high 28 points, went a perfect 10-10 from the charity stripe and grabbed 12 rebounds in her double-double performance.

For the season, Kiara Bradley has led the charge for the Cardinals, both offensively and defensively, averaging 16 points/game and bringing down just under 7.4 rebounds. She also is second on the team with 26 steals and third with 22 assists.

The Cardinals and Miners have found that they match up well against one another; S&T leads the all-time record of 11-9 over WJC, but have seen the last three match-ups favoring Jewell.

Last season, the Miners defense could not hold the Cardinals as they put up a 30-point final quarter to take the 74-68 win.

The Cardinals will play at Maryville University on Thursday night before hosting the Miners on Saturday afternoon.
