ROLLA, MO- Missouri S&T's men's soccer team will return home this weekend for two GLVC matches against Illinois Springfield and Lewis as they look to get back to .500 for the season.
The Miners come into this weekend's matches 2-3 overall and 1-2 in conference play after dropping a heartbreaker at Drury University on Sunday. After back and forth scoring, and goals from
Trey Haman (St. Louis, MO/St. Louis University HS) and
Shane Cairns (North Olmstead, OH/North Olmstead) (2), the Miners found themselves tied with the Panthers at 3-3 going into the break. A late match PK from Drury's Jamie O'Brien secured the 4-3 DU win.
S&T's offense has been explosive this season, recording 11 goals in the opening five matches.
Shane Cairns (North Olmstead, OH/North Olmstead) and Try Haman currently lead the Miners with two goals each while
Joe Mueller (Cottleville, MO/Francis Howell Central HS),
Tyler Sivadon (Spring, TX/Concordia Lutheran),
Paal Benum (Trondheim, Norway/Byaasen Videregaadende),
Bertram Gjelfort (Frederiksberg, Denmark/Falkonergaarden),
Jacob Bandy (Bettendorf, IA/Pleasant Valley), and
Nicholas Sikora (Highland, IL/Highland) all have one goal recorded.
Nick Posey (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) has been the go-to in goal for S&T this season. He has just over 442 minutes played and has nine recorded saves for the season.
About Illinois Springfield:
The Prairie Stars, who are 3-2-1 overall and 1-1-1 in GLVC play, picked up their first conference win of the season on Sunday at Missouri-St. Louis when they came out with a 1-0 victory.
UIS's Jay Younger got the game winning goal in the 31' of play when Edward Rose found Younger in the box and sent it past UMSL's goalkeeper, Anton Mukhin.
Illinois Springfield's offense has been slow compared to the Miners this season, recording just six goals in their opening matches. Mario Flasone has recorded 1/3 of them with an assist to go with his goals while Dan Mahony, Jay Younger, Javier Milla, and Quentin Reese have all scored one goal each.
Pijus Petkevicius has been the only goalkeeper for the Prairie Stars to play this season, going just over 561 minutes in goal while picking up 18 saves in the process.
About Lewis:
The Flyers, who will face-off against the Saints of Maryville University before coming to Rolla, come into the weekend 5-0-1 overall and 2-0-1 in conference play after coming up with a draw against the Lions of Lindenwood University on Sunday afternoon.
Lewis has produced quality offensive numbers this season with eight goals through six games. Jimmy Mwanga and Oliwer Mattiasson both have two goal each while four other Flyer players have recorded one goal.
C.J. Couper has started and played in all six matches for the Flyers this season, going just under 595 minutes in goal while allowing just one goal. His 25 saves for the season ranks him 21
st in NCAA Division II for total saves while his one goal allowed ranks him in 1
st place.
