Miners fall twice to sixth-ranked Quincy

QUINCY, Ill. – Missouri S&T's baseball team entered its weekend series with sixth-ranked Quincy averaging over six runs per game this season, but was held to two over the course of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon as it dropped both ends of the twinbill by scores of 10-2 and 1-0.

The Miners and Hawks – who were separated by just one game at the top of the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings when the day began -- were locked up in a scoreless duel in game two for the first six innings, with the Miners' best scoring opportunities coming in the sixth and seventh innings.

In each of those frames, the Miners got two runners on base with one out and stranded them in both instances.  After the second missed chance, Quincy broke the tie off S&T starter Dalton Erger (Imperial, MO/Seckman) in the bottom of the seventh when TJ Tamaccio walked with one out and scored on a two-out triple off the bat of Nolan Snyder.

Each team had five hits in game two; Will Hayes (Terre Haute, IN/South Vigo) had two of the five S&T hits.

The Hawks scored all 10 of their runs in game one in the first four innings, getting three in the first on a two-run homer by Cody Birdsong and a solo shot by Jeff Hightower.  Quincy put four more on the board in the third and three more in the fourth.

S&T got both of its runs on solo homers in the late innings, one by Matt Miller (St. Louis, MO/Oakville) to lead off the sixth and the other by Matt Knickerbocker (Bayfield, CO/Bayfield) in the eighth.  The Miners were outhit 14-7 in game one, as starter Luke Marcheschi (Bloomington, IL/Central Catholic) was handed his first loss in seven decisions on the mound.

The Miners and Hawks close out their weekend series with a single game on Sunday at noon.
