Miners Drop Doubleheader Heartbreaker to Bulldogs

ROLLA, MO- The Miners almost pulled off the greatest upset of the season with two close games against the Bulldogs of Truman State University. S&T fell in game one 14-10 and just narrowly missed TSU in game two by a final score of 4-3.

GAME ONE: MISSOURI S&T: 10, TRUMAN STATE: 14
It was a battle of who would score last in game one, both teams combining for 28 hits in the game.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead after the first inning thanks to five hits from their offense and three Miner errors.

Gretchen Egly (Joliet, IL/Plainfield Central) made things interesting in the bottom half of the inning when she sent a 3-2 count over the right field fence. After Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley) got hit by a pitch and Carley Hamann (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln Way North) drew a walk, Egly got the Miners three of their runs back with her 4th homerun of the season.

TSU pushed their lead out to five in the top of the 2nd when Emma Walbert double to center field and drove Christa Reisinger home. Alyssa Rivera would keep the Bulldogs momentum up when she hit a 2-run homerun over the left field fence to make it an 8-3 game.

After another Bulldog run scored in the top of the 3rd, the Miners would go on a 5-run bottom half of the inning to get within one.

Marcy McCalla (Staunton, IL/Staunton) got things rolling when she singled to center field to bring Gretchen Egly (Joliet, IL/Plainfield Central) and Jacey Allen (Roanoke, TX/Byron Nelson) around the bases. Anna Burke (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) picked up two RBI when she singled to deep center field to send McCalla and Lauren King (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt North) across home plate and make it a 9-7 game. Carley Hamann (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln Way North) tacked on another run before the end of the inning with a single to right field that brought Anna Burke (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) home.

The Miners saw their first lead of the game in the bottom of the 4th inning when Marcy McCalla (Staunton, IL/Staunton) got every piece of a 1-1 count; with Lauren King (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt North) on base, McCalla sent a high fly ball over the right field fence to give S&T the 10-9 lead.

Truman State went on to score three more runs in the 5th and two more in the 6th to secure their 14-10 win.

Olivia Walter (Catawissa, MO/Cor Jesu Academy) got the start for game one going 3.0 innings with two strikeouts and 10 hits allowed. Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield) (2-9) gets credited with the loss after going 4.0 innings with eight hits allowed.

GAME TWO: MISSOURI S&T: 3, TRUMAN STATE: 4

After both teams scored a run, Gretchen Egly (Joliet, IL/Plainfield Central) put the Miners up by one in the 3rd inning after a single to center field and brought Carley Hamann (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln Way North) home. The very next batter, Jacey Allen (Roanoke, TX/Byron Nelson), picked up an RBI after she reached on a fielder's choice and sent Hannah Smith (Oconomowoc, WI/Catholic Memorial) home to make it a 3-1 game.
