ROLLA, MO- After dropping both games to Indianapolis yesterday, the Miners stepped up their game today taking both outings from Lewis with final scores of 7-5 and 9-1.
GAME ONE: MISSOURI S&T-7, LEWIS-5
Things were quiet to start game one with the only run coming in the bottom of the 2
nd when
Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley) drew a bases loaded walk to send
Lauren King (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt North) home to give the Miners a 1-0 lead.
Starting pitcher
Olivia Walter (Catawissa, MO/Cor Jesu Academy) threw a perfect three innings for S&T. That streak was broken by the Flyers' in the top of the 4
th when Cierra Taylor singled to right field that would start a rally for Lewis.
After Taylor found herself on second from a Miner error, Cassie Shaw singled to centerfield to tie the game at 1-1. Elexis Swartzentruber would give the Flyers' their first lead of the game with a 2 RBI single to right field to put them up 3-1.
The Miners came back swinging in the bottom half of the 4
th and 5
th innings;
Courtney Jackson (Parkville, MO/Park Hill South) got the ball rolling when she hit a sac-fly out to centerfield that would allow
Carley Hamann (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln Way North) to tag up and score from third.
Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley) would tie the game at 3-3 on an RBI single to being
Anna Burke (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) around the bases.
The hit streak continued in the bottom of the 5
th for the Miners when
Olivia Young (Millstadt, IL/Belleville Township) singled to left field and brought
Gretchen Egly (Joliet, IL/Plainfield Central) home.
Anna Burke (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) would give S&T two security runs with a 2 RBI single to centerfield that sent Hamann and Young across home plate.
The Flyers hit back in the top of the 6
th with back-to-back homeruns from Lauren Brennan and Elexis Swartzentruber to make it a 6-5 game.
S&T added one final run from
Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley) in the bottom of the 6
th to secure their 7-5 win.
Olivia Walter (Catawissa, MO/Cor Jesu Academy) (4-10) got the start for game one going 5.1 innings with three strikeouts and just one walk.
Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield) picked up her first save of the season when she came in for relief for 1.2 innings and allowed just one hit.
GAME TWO: MISSOURI S&T-9, LEWIS-1 (5 INNINGS)
The Miners kept their good spirits up in game two, winning in just five innings of work and picking up their first doubleheader sweep of the season.
The hot bats began in the 1
st inning when the Miners drove in five runs on five hits to open the game.
Jacey Allen (Roanoke, TX/Byron Nelson) started things off with a single to centerfield that brought
Courtney Jackson (Parkville, MO/Park Hill South) home.
Carley Hamann (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln Way North) would pick up two RBI when she doubled to deep center field that allowed Allen and
Hannah Franceschini (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield Central) to score.
Lauren King (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt North) would add on two more runs for the Miners when she hit a rocket to center field that sent Hamann and
Olivia Young (Millstadt, IL/Belleville Township) home to make it a 5-0 game.
Lewis' lone run would come in the top of the 2
nd when Lauren Brennan doubled to centerfield and brought Elexis Swartzentruber across home plate.
S&T kept the runs coming in the bottom of the 3
rd when
Lauren King (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt North) and
Anna Burke (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) both knocked in a run each to extend their lead to 7-1. A passed ball from Lewis' Swartzenburger would bring in another run to make it an 8-1 game.
Gretchen Egly (Joliet, IL/Plainfield Central) put the final exclamation point to the Miners' day when she hit her second homerun of the season over the left field fence to put S&T up 9-1.
The Miners' defense held solid in the top of the 5
th inning to give them their second victory of the day.
Avery English (Carterville, IL/Carterville) (4-4) pitched a complete game with one strikeout and allowed just two hits.
