LEBANON, ILL- The Miners were able to start their weekend trip away with a doubleheader split with the Bearcats of McKendree University. While McKendree took the first game 6-0, the Miners were able to come back and take game two by a final score of 2-0.
GAME ONE: MISSOURI S&T-0, MCKENDREE-6
After the Bearcats picked up a run in the bottom of the 2
nd inning, the Miners held them until the 6
th inning where they picked up five runs on homeruns from Gojewski and McKinley.
S&T had multiple chances to connect for runs during the game; in the top of the 2
nd inning, the Miners saw themselves with the bases loaded with one out and ended up stranding all three runners. They would have the opportunity again in the top of the 7
th, but the defense of McKendree held them to no runs and another three runners stranded.
McKendree secured their win in the bottom of the 6
th where they scored five runs on six hits; after a single to the infield put Jenny Homann at first base, Miranda Gajewski opened things up for the Bearcats with a 2-run shot over the center field fence to make it 3-0. Ashleigh McKinley topped Homann's homer with one of her own when she sent a ball over the fence for three more runs and the 6-0 win.
Olivia Walter (Catawissa, MO/Cor Jesu Academy) (5-14) got the start for game one and went 5.0 innings where she recorded one strikeout and just one walk.
Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield) finished the last inning where she allowed just two hits.
GAME TWO: MISSOURI S&T-2, MCKENDREE-0
The Miner defense held steady in game two, keeping the Bearcats at bay and taking the game two win.
S&T scored their first run in the top of the 4
th inning after
Gretchen Egly (Joliet, IL/Plainfield Central) singled to right field and brought
Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley) home from second base to give them a 1-0 lead.
The Miners struck again in the top of the 6
th when
Hannah Franceschini (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield Central) had an infield single that would allow
Jacey Allen (Roanoke, TX/Byron Nelson) to score and extend S&T's lead to 2-0.
McKendree didn't score for lack of hits; the Bearcats recorded eight hits and left five players on base during the game and had a runner in scoring position for the first four innings and were held to no runs thanks to the Miner defense.
Avery English (Carterville, IL/Carterville) (5-7) got the start for game two and pitched a complete game that included four strikeouts and just one walk.
