Miners Split Opening Doubleheader of Weekend

LEBANON, ILL- The Miners were able to start their weekend trip away with a doubleheader split with the Bearcats of McKendree University. While McKendree took the first game 6-0, the Miners were able to come back and take game two by a final score of 2-0.

GAME ONE: MISSOURI S&T-0, MCKENDREE-6
After the Bearcats picked up a run in the bottom of the 2nd inning, the Miners held them until the 6th inning where they picked up five runs on homeruns from Gojewski and McKinley.

S&T had multiple chances to connect for runs during the game; in the top of the 2nd inning, the Miners saw themselves with the bases loaded with one out and ended up stranding all three runners. They would have the opportunity again in the top of the 7th, but the defense of McKendree held them to no runs and another three runners stranded.

McKendree secured their win in the bottom of the 6th where they scored five runs on six hits; after a single to the infield put Jenny Homann at first base, Miranda Gajewski opened things up for the Bearcats with a 2-run shot over the center field fence to make it 3-0. Ashleigh McKinley topped Homann's homer with one of her own when she sent a ball over the fence for three more runs and the 6-0 win.

Olivia Walter (Catawissa, MO/Cor Jesu Academy) (5-14) got the start for game one and went 5.0 innings where she recorded one strikeout and just one walk. Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield) finished the last inning where she allowed just two hits.

GAME TWO: MISSOURI S&T-2, MCKENDREE-0
The Miner defense held steady in game two, keeping the Bearcats at bay and taking the game two win.

S&T scored their first run in the top of the 4th inning after Gretchen Egly (Joliet, IL/Plainfield Central) singled to right field and brought Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley) home from second base to give them a 1-0 lead.

The Miners struck again in the top of the 6th when Hannah Franceschini (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield Central) had an infield single that would allow Jacey Allen (Roanoke, TX/Byron Nelson) to score and extend S&T's lead to 2-0.

McKendree didn't score for lack of hits; the Bearcats recorded eight hits and left five players on base during the game and had a runner in scoring position for the first four innings and were held to no runs thanks to the Miner defense.

Avery English (Carterville, IL/Carterville) (5-7) got the start for game two and pitched a complete game that included four strikeouts and just one walk.
