ROLLA, MO- The Miner softball team took a hard hit today as they got back into GLVC play against the Greyhounds of the University of Indianapolis. UIndy was able to take two from S&T today, getting the 10-1 and 5-3 wins.
GAME ONE: MISSOURI S&T-1, UINDY-10
The Greyhounds jumped out to a quick lead over the Miners; back-to-back multi-run homeruns in the top of the 2
nd and 3
rd innings from Taylor Danielson and Gianni Iannantone would give them a comfortable 5-0 lead.
After adding another run in the top of the 4
th inning, the Miners saw a glimmer of hope in the bottom half of the inning; with
Olivia Young (Millstadt, IL/Belleville Township) on second base,
Jacey Allen (Roanoke, TX/Byron Nelson) ripped a ball down the left field line to send Young home to cut their deficit to 6-1.
UIndy tacked on four more runs before the end of the game to take the 10-1 win.
Olivia Walter (Catawissa, MO/Cor Jesu Academy) (3-10) got the start in game one going 4.0 innings with two strikeouts and two walks
Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield) pitched the final 3.0 innings recording two strikeouts and just one walk.
GAME TWO: MISSOURI S&T-3, UINDY-5
UIndy took another early lead to open game two; back-to-back RBI hits from Indianapolis gave them a 2-0 lead in the 1
st inning. They would add on another run in the top of the 2
nd inning after a two-out double from Sydnie Foster brought Hanna Burris around the bases.
S&T would redeem themselves in the 2
nd and 3
rd innings.
Lauren King (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt North) drove in the Miners first run of the game in the bottom of the 2
nd with a ground out to first base that sent
Gretchen Egly (Joliet, IL/Plainfield Central) home to cut their deficit to 3-1.
Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley) would give the Miners another run in the 3
rd inning when
Jacey Allen (Roanoke, TX/Byron Nelson) doubled down the left field line and sent her around the diamond to make it a 3-2 game.
The Greyhounds extended their lead even more through the 6
th and 7
th innings with RBI hits from Taylor Danielson and Gianni Iannantone, respectively, that would push their lead to 5-2 heading into the bottom of the 7
th.
The Miners had the chance to win the game in the final innings after loading the bases with no outs. They would only get one run out of it after
Gretchen Egly (Joliet, IL/Plainfield Central) drew a bases loaded walk to bring
Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley) across home plate and see a 5-3 loss to Indianapolis.
Avery English (Carterville, IL/Carterville) (3-4) got the start for game two pitching 6.2 innings while recording two strikeouts while
Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield) finished out the game.
