Miners Rally For Game Two Win Over Northwest Missouri State

ROLLA, MO- After making a run against Northwest Missouri State in game one of the doubleheader, the Miners turned around and handed the Bearcats a heartbreaking 5-4 loss to split the series.

GAME ONE: MISSOURI S&T: 3, NORTHWEST MISSOURI: 5
The Bearcats struck first in the opening inning when Kaitlyn Weis grounded out to shortstop and sent Olivia Daughtry home to make it a 1-0 game.

S&T got that run back in the bottom half of the first inning; Jacey Allen (Roanoke, TX/Byron Nelson) doubled to right field and brought Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley) across home plate.

Northwest added two more runs in the top of the 4th inning when Erin Keeney blasted a homerun over the centerfield fence to regain their lead. The Bearcats would get another run in the top of the 5th with an RBI base hit to make a 4-1 game.

The Miners saw a glimmer of light in the bottom of the 5th; After Courtney Jackson (Parkville, MO/Park Hill South) singled to shortstop and advanced on a wild pitch, she would get sent home on Olivia Young's (Millstadt, IL/Belleville Township) single to right field to cut their deficit to 4-2. Young would make her way around the bases and end up scoring on another Northwest wild pitch to make it 4-3.

The Bearcats secured their win in the top of the seventh when Kaitlyn Weis took a 2-2 count and made it into a solo homerun to give Northwest a 5-3 lead, and the eventual win.

Olivia Walter (Catawissa, MO/Cor Jesu Academy) (3-9) got the start for game one going a full seven innings with three strikeouts and allowing seven hits.

GAME TWO: MISSOURI S&T: 5, NORTHWEST MISSOURI: 4 (8 INNINGS)
Northwest opened the game with a three-run homerun from Kaitlyn Weis in the top of the first to give the Miners an immediate deficit.

S&T chipped away at the Bearcats lead, the first coming in the bottom of the second when Lauren King (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt North) hit a rocket to right field and brought Carley Hamann (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln Way North) home.

Olivia Young (Millstadt, IL/Belleville Township) would spark the Miners in the third inning with her first homerun of the season over the right field fence to make it a 3-2 ball game.

While Northwest picked up another run in the top of the 5th inning, Carley Hamann (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln Way North) tied the game in the bottom half of the inning when she singled to deep center field and brought Hannah Franceschini (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield Central) and Olivia Young (Millstadt, IL/Belleville Township) across home plate to tie it up at 4-4.

Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley) would draw the game winning walk in the bottom of the eighth inning that brought Lauren King (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt North) home for the 5-4 win.

Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield) (2-8) got the start and the win in game two pitching a complete game with two strikeouts and two walks.
