KANSAS CITY, MO- The Miner softball team got back on track today as they split their GLVC doubleheader with Rockhurst University. The Hawks came out and took game one by a final score of 4-2 while the Miners came back and won game two 5-0.
GAME ONE: MISSOURI S&T-2, ROCKHURST-4
Missouri S&T saw a glimmer of hope in game one as they held the lead for the majority of the game.
Lauren King (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt North) brought in the first run of the game in the top of the second inning when she singled up the middle and brought
Hannah Franceschini (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield Central) home to make it a 1-0 game.
Carley Hamann (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln Way North) added to the Miners lead in the following inning when she hit a ball to short and sent
Gretchen Egly (Joliet, IL/Plainfield Central) home to give S&T a 2-0 lead.
After the Hawks redeemed themselves in the bottom half of the third with a sac-fly that led to a run, the Miners were looking at breaking their three game losing streak. But, it was short lived as Rockhurst came back in the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back doubles that turned into three runs. Those three runs were enough to hold the Miners and hand them the 4-2 loss.
Avery English (Carterville, IL/Carterville) (3-3) got the start for game one going 5.2 innings with four strikeouts and just one walk.
Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield) finished out the rest of the game with no hits allowed.
GAME TWO: MISSOURI S&T-5, ROCKHURST-0
It was all S&T in game two of the doubleheader; the Miners hold the Hawks to just four hits during the game while collecting 11 hits as a team that turned into five runs.
Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley) opened up the game with a single to the pitcher's circle that brought
Courtney Jackson (Parkville, MO/Park Hill South) home to give S&T a 1-0 lead.
Gretchen Egly (Joliet, IL/Plainfield Central) would send Klein home after her sac-fly out to left field to push the Miners lead to 2-0.
Jackson scored again in the third after Egly reached on a Hawks error to extend the Miner run to 3-0.
Klein would wrap things up for the Miners and secure their win in the top of the 6
th inning when she singled up the middle on the first pitch she saw to bring
Anna Burke (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) and
Hannah Franceschini (Plainfield, IL/Plainfield Central) home for their 5-0 lead, and eventual win.
