Softball Falls to Ashland, Grand Valley State

ROSEMONT, ILL- Missouri S&T (3-9) had a rough second day up at the Dome Invitational, dropping both games today. Ashland took the first game by a score of 3-2 while 16th ranked Grand Valley State took the second game 8-2.

GAME ONE: MISSOURI S&T-2, ASHLAND-3
The Miners were the first on the board in game one, maintaining their lead for the majority of the game.

Carley Hamann (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln Way North) drove in the first run for S&T in the top of the 4th when she hit a sacrifice fly to left field and sent Marcy McCalla (Staunton, IL/Staunton) home. Anna Burke (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) added in one more run before the end of the inning with a single to right-center field that would allow Jacey Allen (Roanoke, TX/Byron Nelson) to score easily.

Missouri S&T had multiple opportunities to extend their lead, leaving nine on-base for the game.

Looking at a 2-0 advantage heading into the bottom of the 7th, the Miners saw their lead disappear on four hits from Ashland.

Camille Pollutro drove in the first run for the Eagles with a single to center field that brought Erika Farst. The very next batter, Paige Summers, hit a sacrifice fly out to center field the scored Alli Hylton to make it a 2-2 game. Dayna Denner would end the game on an RBI single to give Ashland the 3-2 win.

Abby Klein (Kansas City, MO/Staley) led the Miners with two hits while Courtney Jackson (Parkville, MO/Park Hill South), Olivia Young (Millstadt, IL/Belleville Township), Gretchen Egly (Joliet, IL/Plainfield Central), Olivia Walter (Catawissa, MO/Cor Jesu Academy), Carley Hamann (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln Way North), and Anna Burke (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) all had one hit apiece.

Olivia Walter (Catawissa, MO/Cor Jesu Academy) (2-3) got the start for game one going 6.1 innings with four strikeouts and nine hits.

GAME TWO: GRAND VALLEY STATE-8, MISSOURI S&T- 2
S&T faced off against the 16th ranked Lakers in game two of the day. They trailed 3-2 through four innings, but a five run 5th inning would put GVSU up big and, eventually, give them the 8-2 win.

After Grand Valley State plated one run in the first inning and two in the second, the Miners answered with back-to-back runs in the 3rd and 4th to get within one of the Lakers.

Jacey Allen (Roanoke, TX/Byron Nelson) kicked things off for S&T with an RBI single to left-center field that would send Courtney Jackson (Parkville, MO/Park Hill South) home from third base and make it a 3-1 game.

Lauren King (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt North) picked up an RBI in the 4th inning with a single through the left side to bring Carley Hamann (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln Way North) across the plate to cut the Miners deficit to just one.

Grand Valley State opened up shop in the bottom of the 5th inning, getting three RBI hits that scored four runs and notching in another run on a wild pitch from S&T. That 8-2 lead would be all they needed to secure the win in the end.

Anna Burke (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville) led the Miners offensively with two hits while Jackson, Klein, Egly, Allen, Hamman, and King all collected one hit each.

Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield) (1-6) got the start for game two going 4.1 innings with one strikeout. Avery English (Carterville, IL/Carterville) finished out the 1.2 innings allowing three hits and one walk.
