Miners Drop Two at SBU

BOLIVAR, MO- After not playing a game in almost two weeks the Miners headed out to Bolivar to take on the Bearcats of Southwest Baptist University. Despite already winning a game against SBU earlier this season, S&T fell in both games by the final scores of 4-0 and 3-2.

GAME ONE: MISSOURI S&T: 0, SOUTHWEST BAPTIST: 4
Missouri S&T picked up their first hit in the top of the 3rd inning when Courtney Jackson (Parkville, MO/Park Hill South) singled up the middle to reach base. Anna Klein followed suit with a single to get the Miners their first runner in scoring position. S&T hitters were not able to connect for a run and continued to face a scoreless tie.

The Miners got another chance in the top of the 4th inning when a sac-bunt from Carley Hamann (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln Way North) and a single from Lauren King (O'Fallon, MO/Fort Zumwalt North) put Jacey Allen (Roanoke, TX/Byron Nelson) and Olivia Walter (Catawissa, MO/Cor Jesu Academy) at second and third base, respectively. For the second consecutive inning, the Miners were not able to turn baserunners into scoring runs.

Southwest Baptist got their first run in the bottom half of the 4th inning when Miranda Aguilar hit an RBI double and sent Morgan McMullin home to take a 1-0 lead.

The Bearcats would add two more runs in the 5th and another run in the 6th to take game one by a final score of 4-0.

Olivia Walter (Catawissa, MO/Cor Jesu Academy) (2-4) got the start for game one going 5.0 innings with three strikeouts while Kate Baxter (New Bloomfield, MO/New Bloomfield) finished the last inning with one strikeout.

GAME TWO: MISSOURI S&T: 2, SOUTHWEST BAPTIST: 3
Things began to look up for the Miners in the second game.

Carley Hamann (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln Way North) got things going in the top of the 1st when she singled to center field and brought Anna Klein home from second base to take an early 1-0 lead.

The Bearcats tied it up in the bottom half of the 1st inning when Sam Moran doubled to deep left field and brought Paige St. Pierre across the plate. SBU would plate another run in the bottom of the 2nd inning to take a 2-1 lead.

It wouldn't be until the top of the 7th inning when the Miners rallied to extend the game.

After Courtney Jackson (Parkville, MO/Park Hill South) singled to reach base, Keely Morgan (Laguna Hills, CA/Laguna Hills) hit a bomb into deep right field that would drop off the players' glove and drop; Jackson would end up scoring on the error to tie the game and put Morgan at 3rd for the game-leading run. S&T was not able to connect for another run in the inning and went to the bottom of the 7th tied at 2-2.

SBU ended game two and took their second win of the day on an RBI single from Kori Hillenburg that would send Yezzania Gongalez home from third base for the 3-2 win.

Katie Baxter got the start for game two going 2.0 innings with one strikeout. Avery English (Carterville, IL/Carterville) (0-1) gets credited for the loss after going 4.2 innings with three strikeouts and just three hits.
