ROLLA, Mo. – A split on its final home weekend of the season has Missouri S&T's men's soccer team in a scramble to earn a berth to the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament – and now the Miners will head to the road for their final four contests in an effort to land among the top eight teams in the standings.
The Miners, 5-6-2 overall and 4-5-2 in the GLVC, are currently tied with Truman State and Lewis for ninth place in the standings heading into play this weekend. S&T will open its final stretch Friday when it faces Indianapolis in a 7:30 p.m. (Eastern time) contest before heading down the road to Louisville, Ky., to take on Bellarmine Sunday at 2:30 p.m. (Eastern time).
ABOUT THE MINERS: Missouri S&T opened the past weekend by knocking off Truman State 2-1 Friday night at Allgood-Bailey Stadium, as
Bertram Gjelfort (Frederiksberg, Denmark/Falkonergaarden) scored his team-high sixth goal of the season in the 70
th minute to break a 1-1 tie. However, the Miners were unable to complete the weekend sweep as Quincy got a goal in overtime to hand S&T a 2-1 setback that pushed S&T outside of the top eight in the conference standings.
Gjelfort enters play this week ranked tied for eighth with his six goals on the year and is one of seven Miners who have scored at least two goals this season.
Paal Benum (Trondheim, Norway/Byaasen Videregaadende), who scored S&T's goal Sunday on a penalty kick, has three goals on the year, while
Jason Jorgensen (Florence, Italy/Liceo Scientifico Santa Maria) and
Julien Denis (Olathe, KS/Olathe East) have two goals and two assists apiece.
Nick Posey (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville), who has started every game in goal this season, has a 1.90 goals against average with 36 saves in 1,228 minutes of playing time.
ABOUT INDIANAPOLIS: The Greyhounds come into Friday's game sporting a five-game winning streak, which includes three shutouts and an 11-2 shellacking of Southwest Baptist on Friday. UIndy followed up the win at SBU with a 2-0 victory Sunday at Drury to improve to 9-3-1 overall and 7-3-1 in the GLVC.
Javier Steinwascher leads UIndy in scoring with 18 points on the year with four goals and a GLVC-high 10 assists, while Alejandro Steinwascher has four goals and four assists. Three other Greyhounds – Bryan Moriera, Mase Koki and Ben Rohder – have scored four goals apiece for the GLVC's highest scoring team with 34 goals on the year.
Goalkeeper Dimitrios Karousos has a 0.82 goals against average with 43 saves in 1,201 minutes of action.
ABOUT BELLARMINE: The 14
th-ranked Knights handed Southwest Baptist a 6-0 loss Sunday to extend their unbeaten streak to 22 games dating back to last season. Bellarmine will put that streak on the line Friday when they host Maryville in a clash of top-three teams in the standings before the Miners come to town on Sunday.
Tomas Bernedo is tied for third in the GLVC with nine goals on the year, while Micah Linscott has four goals and five assists for 13 points. Greg Fischer and Juan Ballas have also scored four times apiece for the Knights, who are 10-0-3 overall and 7-0-3 in the GLVC.
Connor Range has a 0.61 goals against average in the nets for the Knights while making 26 saves in 1,185 minutes and recording four shutouts.
