Miners continue homestand by hosting Cardinals, Hawks

10/1/2019 4:58:00 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – Following a weekend in which it picked up a win and a tie in Great Lakes Valley Conference play, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team will continue its homestand during Homecoming weekend as it hosts a pair of contests on campus.

The Miners will take on William Jewell Friday at Allgood-Bailey Stadium in a 7:30 p.m. contest, then faces Rockhurst Sunday at 2:30 p.m.  Sunday's contest is scheduled to take place at the S&T Soccer Field.

S&T opened play last weekend by ending a 31-game shutout drought with a 1-0 win over Illinois Springfield, as it got a second half goal from Bertram Gjelfort (Frederiksberg, Denmark/Falkonergaarden) and earned a clean sheet for goalkeeper Nick Posey (Edwardsville, IL/Edwardsville), as the Miners blanked a foe for the first time in over two seasons.  Gjelfort scored again on Sunday in the Miners' 2-2 tie with Lewis, which leaves S&T at 3-3-1 overall and 2-2-1 in GLVC play.

Gjelfort has scored three of the Miners' 14 goals on the season, while Shane Cairns (North Olmstead, OH/North Olmstead) and Trey Haman (St. Louis, MO/St. Louis University HS) have scored two times apiece.  The Miners have received goals from 10 different players this season.

Posey comes into the weekend owning a 2.10 goals against average and has made 16 saves in 642 minutes of play.

ABOUT WILLIAM JEWELL: The Cardinals enter the week still seeking their first victory of the season, as they are winless in seven games overall and have dropped all five of their GLVC contests.  William Jewell lost a 2-1 decision Sunday at Southwest Baptist after falling 4-1 two days earlier to Drury.

Five different players have scored for the Cardinals, with Griffin King also adding an assist for a team-high three points.  Jose Cambreros has seen the bulk of the playing time in goal and has a 2.84 goals against average with 37 saves.

ABOUT ROCKHURST: The Hawks come into the week with a record similar to the Miners at 3-3-1 overall and improved to 3-2 in GLVC play by knocking off Drury 2-1 Sunday.  Rockhurst has won two straight as it also captured a victory at Southwest Baptist last weekend.

Jordan Andrews leads the Hawks in scoring with three goals and six points, while Jackson Wood has tallied two goals on the season.  Rockhurst has scored just seven goals in its first seven contests – four of them coming last weekend – but has given up just eight behind the goalkeeping of Peter Baker, who has made 27 saves to go along with a 1.26 goals against average.
