Trio of S&T swimmers land CSCAA Scholar All-America awards

ROLLA, Mo. – Three members of MissourI S&T's swimming team have been selected as Scholar All-America award recipients for the 2017-18 season by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America.

The trio of Miners selected were junior Kevin McPherson (Oakdale, MN/Tartan), sophomore Tim Samuelsen (Stavanger, Norway/St. Svithun VGS) and freshman Josh Umrysh, who were named on the basis of a grade point average of 3.5 or better and competing at the NCAA Division II Championships.

At the national meet, all three earned All-America honors, with Samuelsen winning national championships in the 1,000- and 1,650-yard freestyle races.  Samuelsen also finished seventh in the 500-yard freestyle and accumulated 52 points in the meet, the most by any Miner in the four-day competition and was also named last month to the Google Cloud Academic All-America team.

McPherson earned his All-America awards in the 400- and 800-yard freestyle relays, while Umrysh earned his award in the 400-yard medley relay.

The Miners were recently named as a recipient of the CSCAA's team Scholar All-America award.
