Miners drop pair of high-scoring contests to Panthers

ROLLA, Mo. --  Missouri S&T's baseball team fell short in a pair of high scoring contests Monday afternoon as it dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Drury at the S&T Ballpark, losing by scores of 13-6 and 12-9.

The Miners saw Drury pull away in the late innings of a tight opener, then couldn't overcome a scoring flurry by the Panthers in the middle innings of game two as they fell to 16-18 overall and 7-9 in the GLVC.

Drury (22-16, 13-3 GLVC) grabbed a 4-0 lead in game one with a run in the first and three in the second, but the Miners started clawing back in the bottom of the second when Matt Gruse (Neenah, WI/Neenah) led off the inning with a hit and later scored on a two-out single by Kaleb Reid (Smithville, MO/Smithville).

Two innings later, the Miners drew closer after Gruse again opened an inning by reaching base.  Following a leadoff walk to him, he would end up at third following a single by Matt Knickerbocker (Bayfield, CO/Bayfield) and scored on a one-out double by Reid.   Knickerbocker scored on Jason Volkmann (Liberty, MO/Liberty)'s sacrifice fly, but Reid was stranded at third to end the inning.

The Panthers broke the game open in the sixth as they scored four times, then tacked on five more runs in the seventh before the Miners got an RBI double by Zach Wiegand (Coppell, TX/Parish Episcopal) and a two-run homer by Brady Wildschuetz (Foristell, MO/Francis Howell) in the bottom of the seventh.

Reid had three hits for the Miners, who were outhit 13-11 in the opener.  Starting pitcher Dalton Erger (Imperial, MO/Seckman) took the loss on the hill for S&T.

Game two saw S&T take an early 4-0 lead, as the Miners scored three times in the second thanks to four consecutive hits, an error and a run-scoring fielder's choice, followed by a run in the third when Reid singled in Gruse.  However, the Miners missed a chance for much more as they stranded the bases loaded in both of those innings.

S&T starter Matthew Lamb (Doniphan, NE/Grand Island) retired nine straight Panthers after allowing a leadoff single to Brant Schaffitzel to begin the contest, but the game turned in the fourth inning.

Following a pair of walks to start the inning, KK Daniel belted a three-run homer to cut the S&T lead to one, then an error with one out opened the door to a big inning as the Panthers got three straight hits – the third being a two-run triple by Caleb Essick to put Drury into the lead.

The Panthers would end up scoring seven runs in the fourth, then added three more in the fifth before the Miners started their rally effort.

S&T pushed across a run in the sixth when Lucas Swindle (Weldon Spring, MO/Lutheran-St. Charles) doubled in Nathan Volkmann (Liberty, MO/Liberty), then cut the Drury lead to 10-6 in the seventh when Drew Aldana (El Paso, TX/JM Hanks) doubled to the fence in left center and came across on a groundout by Wiegand.

Drury picked up two insurance runs in the eighth, but the Miners got those two back in the bottom of the eighth when Reid doubled off the top of the fence in left to score Tim Lira (Granger, IN/Penn) and Aldana.  Then in the ninth, S&T loaded the bases with one out on a double by Knickerbocker, a hit by Cameron Burk (Nacogdoches, TX/Cushing) and when Conner Forsythe (Farmington, MO/Farmington) was hit by a pitch.

Gruse drew a walk to force in a run and bring the winning run to the plate, but Nick Costantino recorded back-to-back strikeouts to close out the game.

S&T had 18 hits in game two – outhitting the Panthers 18-13 – as they recorded at least 18 hits in a game for the third time this season.  Gruse, Aldana, Reid and N. Volkmann all had three hits apiece and Reid knocked in four runs in the nightcap.

The Miners will face McKendree Wednesday in a non-conference game in Lebanon, Ill., beginning at 2 p.m.
