Miners rally for game one win, but settle for split with Maryville

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T rallied in the opening game of Sunday's Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader with Maryville to take a 3-2 decision in nine innings, but the Saints came away with a split and the series victory by blanking the Miners 5-0 in the finale at the S&T Ballpark.

After Maryville had taken a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning of game one, the Miners tied the score in the bottom half of the inning when Cameron Burk (Nacogdoches, TX/Cushing) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home Zach Bracken (Berthoud, CO/Berthoud).  The Miners had a chance for more in the inning, but Maryville pitcher Tanner Marshall induced a double play ball to get the first two outs and got a strikeout to escape the jam.

S&T's bullpen held down the fort over the next four innings, getting out of a two-on, none-out jam in the eighth with a double play and a strikeout and again in the ninth, when catcher Justus Nelson (Plymouth, MN/Robbinsdale Armstrong) got Drake Lubin at the plate when he tried to score on a ball in the dirt that had bounced away from him.

In the bottom half of the ninth, Zach Wiegand (Coppell, TX/Parish Episcopal) led off with a hit, was sacrificed to second and advanced to third on Nelson's single.  Lucas Swindle (Weldon Spring, MO/Lutheran-St. Charles) reached with an infield hit to load the bases, then Matt Gruse (Neenah, WI/Neenah) slapped a ball between the third baseman and shortstop to bring home Wiegand with the winning run.

Connor Forsythe got the win with two innings of scoreless relief as the Miners outhit Maryville 11-8.  Forsythe and Bracken had two hits apiece for S&T.

The Miners took the initial lead in the game in the third when Jack DeGarmo (Liberty, MO/Liberty North) walked and later came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Burk.

In game two, the Miners were shut out on six hits by Louis Niemerg, as he had a hand in the lead he got to work with by singling and scoring on Dalton Schumer's two-out double in the opening inning.

Maryville got their other four runs courtesy of the long ball, getting a solo homer from Camdon Mercier in the fourth off S&T starter Trent Green (Perryville, MO/Perryville) and a three-run shot by Schumer in the seventh.

Gruse had two of the six hits by S&T, who will return to action Tuesday night with a single game at Lindenwood.  First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
