ROLLA, Mo. – Fresh off two non-conference games that ended with a win and a tie, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team will open its Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule with a pair of weekend contests.
The Miners will wrap up a season-opening three-game homestand Friday when they play host to Indianapolis at 7:30 p.m. at the S&T Soccer Field, then hit the road for the first time in the 2017 regular season for a Sunday contest against Bellarmine in Louisville, Ky. Sunday's game will begin at 2:30 p.m., Eastern time.
S&T opened its season with a 1-0 overtime victory over Northeastern State before playing to a 2-2 tie Tuesday evening against Northwood.
Will McIntyre (Queenstown, New Zealand/)'s goal just under seven minutes into extra time Saturday won the contest for S&T, while the Miners got goals from
Austin Parks (Rolla, MO/Rolla) and
David Murphy (Naperville, IL/Naperville Central) – both on assists from
Unnar Ulfarsson (Gardabaer, Iceland/Fjolnir Reykjavik) – in Tuesday's tie.
Parks has a team-high three points heading into the weekend with a goal and the assist on McIntyre's game-winner Saturday, while goalkeeper
Aaron Hohenstein (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South) has turned away 20 of the 21 opponent shots on net for a 0.87 goals against average.
Hohenstein made eight saves in Saturday's win to earn GLVC "Defensive Player of the Week" honors, then had 12 more saves in Tuesday's contest with Northwood.
ABOUT INDIANAPOLIS: The Greyhounds, who eliminated the Miners in the opening round of last year's GLVC Tournament with a 1-0 victory, went 1-1 in the opening weekend of play as they bounced back from an opening day loss to Northern Michigan to beat Cedarville 2-0 on Saturday.
Josh Mahon and James Jenkins tallied the goals for UIndy in the victory, while Miles Palmer made two saves in goal in his shutout. Jenkins led the Greyhounds in scoring with seven goals and 15 points during the 2016 campaign.
ABOUT BELLARMINE: The Knights won both of their contests in overtime during the first weekend of action, beating Cedarville 2-1 and Davenport 4-3 and received votes in the first United Soccer Coaches national poll of the season.
Callum Southern scored two of the Knights' six goals in the two victories, including the game-winner in the victory over
Cedarville, while Joe Workman had the overtime tally against Davenport in a game where the teams combined for six goals in the first 37 minutes of play and didn't score again until the overtime period.
Zach Pogue saw the majority of action in goal for Bellarmine and enters the weekend – which will begin with a Friday contest at Maryville – with a 0.59 goals against average.
