ROLLA, Mo. – A three-game winning streak has brought Missouri S&T's men's soccer team right back into the race in the Great Lakes Valley Conference as the Miners head to the road for a pair of games in the Kansas City area this weekend.
The Miners, 4-3-1 overall and 3-3 in the GLVC, will face William Jewell Friday in a 7:30 p.m. contest in Liberty, Mo., then head to the south side of Kansas City for a Sunday contest against sixth-ranked Rockhurst. Sunday's match will start at 2:30 p.m.
S&T picked up a pair of shutout victories at home over the past weekend, knocking off Quincy 1-0 and Truman State 2-0 to return to the .500 mark in league play. The win over Quincy snapped an 11-game winless streak against the Hawks.
As a result of the two wins, Missouri S&T also got both of the GLVC's weekly award winners as
David Murphy (Naperville, IL/Naperville Central) was selected as the league's offensive player of the week and goalkeeper
Aaron Hohenstein (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South) won the defensive player for the second time this year.
Hohenstein enters play this week with a 1.32 goals against average and 63 saves in 751 minutes of play. After making 15 total saves in the two wins, Hohenstein ranks second in NCAA Division II in that category.
Murphy, who had a goal in each game and an assist on
Felipe Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/)'s goal to start the scoring on Sunday, leads the Miners with four goals and an assist for nine points. Andrade and
Unnar Ulfarsson (Gardabaer, Iceland/Fjolnir Reykjavik) – who has a team-high four assists – have scored twice this year.
ABOUT WILLIAM JEWELL: The Cardinals come into Friday's game at 1-5 overall and are winless in five games in GLVC play following a weekend that saw them drop decisions to Rockhurst and Drury. The Cardinals were blanked 2-0 at Drury Sunday after losing 6-1 at Rockhurst two days earlier.
Drew Dempsey leads William Jewell with three goals and an assist for seven points, while Teddy Gifford has scored twice. The Cardinals have used two goalkeepers – Nick Cooper and Quinn Ruggeri – who have combined for 21 saves and a 3.00 goals against average. Ruggeri has played 360 of the 540 minutes in net.
ABOUT ROCKHURST: The Hawks, ranked sixth in the latest United Soccer Coaches rankings for NCAA Division II, are the only team in the GLVC that has yet to suffer a loss as they take a 6-0-1 record and 5-0 league mark into Friday's match against Drury.
Kaleb Jackson is second in the GLVC in goals and third in scoring as he has racked up five goals and 11 points on the season, while Umoh Ufot has four goals and an assist. The Hawks also have the league's top-ranked goalkeeper in Logan Feldmann with a 0.41 goals against average; the Rockhurst defense has allowed only 38 shots overall and just 12 on goal thus far in the 2017 season.
Rockhurst has scored a league-high 17 goals this season and the three goals allowed are also the fewest in the conference.
