ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's soccer team will look to better position itself in what appears to be a very competitive Great Lakes Valley Conference race when it hosts a pair of contests this weekend at the S&T Soccer Field.
The Miners will face Quincy Friday evening in a 7:30 p.m. contest, then host Truman State Sunday at 2:30 p.m. to wrap up the weekend.
After opening the conference with three straight setbacks, including an overtime loss Friday at Lewis, the Miners got into the win column Sunday with a second half rally that gave them a 2-1 win at Illinois Springfield. The win moved the Miners to 2-3-1 overall and 1-3 in the GLVC, a conference where 11 teams are within two games of one another two weeks into league play.
Unnar Ulfarsson (Gardabaer, Iceland/Fjolnir Reykjavik), who leads the Miners in scoring for the year with eight points on two goals and a league-high four assists for eight points, tallied the game-winning goal on an assist from
Ian Hansen (Springfield, MO/Kickapoo) in the 86
th minute to break a 1-1 tie and give S&T the win. Ulfarsson's four assists on the year rank ninth in NCAA Division II entering play this week.
Felipe Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/) had the other goal for S&T Sunday as he got into the goal column for the first time this year and 20
th time in his Miner career, moving him into the top 10 on the school's all-time goals list as a result.
David Murphy (Naperville, IL/Naperville Central), who scored late in regulation time Friday to send that contest to overtime, is the only other Miner with multiple goals this year as he has recorded two.
Aaron Hohenstein (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South) enters the week with a 1.73 goals against average and is third nationally with 48 saves on the year.
ABOUT QUINCY: The Hawks come into Friday's contest at 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the GLVC – the loss coming to seventh-ranked Rockhurst – and have allowed just six goals in those five games. Goalkeeper Nate Griffin has a 1.20 goals against average and has turned away 20 shots in 450 minutes of action.
Five different Hawks have scored this season, led by Chris McArthur with two goals, the second of which was a game-winner in the 89
th minute Sunday of the Hawks' 2-1 win over Drury. Anthony Christante has a goal and an assist this season, the assist coming on McArthur's game-winning tally.
The Miners and Hawks played to a 2-2 tie last season in Quincy, a game in which the Miners trailed 2-0 just over 15 minutes into play but tied with under two minutes to play in regulation time.
ABOUT TRUMAN STATE: The Bulldogs are 2-5 on the season and have scored in only three of their seven contests this season, but did pick up their first GLVC win Friday with a 3-2 win over William Jewell after scoring all three goals in the first half. Rockhurst knocked off Truman 2-0 on Sunday to drop the Bulldogs to 1-3 in the GLVC.
Trevor Kaufmann leads Truman in scoring with three goals and seven points on the year, while Jake Koenig has a goal and two assists. Zac Suazo has seen the bulk of the playing time in goal and has a 1.84 goals against average with 16 saves.
Missouri S&T edged Truman 2-1 in Kirksville last season on goals by Andrade and
Tyler Sivadon (Spring, TX/Concordia Lutheran).
