ROLLA, Mo. – Following its opening weekend of Great Lakes Valley Conference play, Missouri S&T's men's soccer team will remain on the road this coming week with a pair of contests in the state of Illinois.
The Miners will look to snap a three-game winless streak Friday when they take on Lewis in a 7:30 p.m. game in Romeoville, Ill., then head down Interstate 55 for a Sunday matchup at Illinois Springfield at 2:30 p.m.
After winning its season opener, the Miners played to a tie with Northwood and then dropped their first two GLVC outings by identical 3-1 scores to Indianapolis and Bellarmine over the weekend. S&T is seeking to avoid its first four-game winless streak since 2014 when it takes the field on Friday.
Unnar Ulfarsson (Gardabaer, Iceland/Fjolnir Reykjavik), who scored the Miner goal in the UIndy contest and has assisted on three goals this year, leads Missouri S&T with five points on the year. Ulfarsson's three assists – tied for ninth in the nation -- increased his career total to 11, moving him to within two of 10
th place on the school's career list.
The Miners have received goals from five different players this season, with
Ian Hansen (Springfield, MO/Kickapoo) tallying the one for S&T Sunday at Bellarmine.
Goalkeeper
Aaron Hohenstein (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South) has a 1.86 goals against average and is fifth in NCAA Division II with an average of 8.5 saves per game.
ABOUT LEWIS: The Flyers enter play this week at 2-2 overall and 1-1 in GLVC after splitting a pair of games in the Kansas City area last week, losing 2-1 in overtime to 14
th-ranked Rockhurst before routing William Jewell 4-1 on Sunday.
John Horstman scored twice in a span of 1:50 in the first half in Sunday's win and leads the Flyers with two goals on the year. Lewis has received goals from six different players as it has seven total goals on the year, while allowing just four on their own part.
Goalkeeper Philip Huang has 11 saves on the season and owns a 1.10 goals against average.
ABOUT ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD: The Prairie Stars bounced back from an opening weekend when they lost twice to win two games on a trip to Missouri last week, posting one-goal wins over William Jewell and Truman State to even their record at 2-2.
Mario Falsone, who is tied with Rhys Wallace for the team's scoring lead with two goals apiece, scored both of UIS' goals in Sunday's win at Truman, including the eventual decisive goal with just under 10 minutes remaining in regulation time. Wallace had the game-winner for the Prairie Stars in the victory at William Jewell in the 74
th minute of play.
Falsone and Wallace have accounted for all four of the UIS goals on the season, while goalkeeper Tommy Geile has a 1.25 goals against average with 15 saves.
