ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T had 29 of its student-athletes record a 4.0 grade point average during the course of the 2016-17 academic year, earning each of them a spot on the inaugural Brother James Gaffney, FSC, Distinguished Scholar Award list from the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
The new award, named after the former president at Lewis University and a two-time chair of the league's Council of Presidents, was given to 275 student-athletes across the conference that finished the academic year with a 4.0 average in the classroom.
Both of S&T's soccer teams had six representatives apiece on the squad, while the volleyball team had five members of its team named. The Miner swimming program had three of its members selected, while student-athletes representing the men's and women's track & field, men's cross country, football, baseball and softball programs made up the balance of the 29 members.
Missouri S&T ranked second in total selections on the list to Truman State, who had 39 of its student-athletes selected.
