Miners open home slate by sweeping Wayne State

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T overcame two late inning deficits to pull out a walk-off win in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader with Wayne State (Neb.) in its home opener at the S&T Ballpark, then completed the sweep by following up the 12-11 win with a 10-4 victory in the nightcap.

S&T led the first game 6-2 heading into the sixth inning, but a seven-run explosion by the Wildcats – capped by Cody Jenkins' three-run homer – put them into the lead.  The Miners rallied back with four in the bottom of the sixth, first drawing to within a run on a two-run single by Matt Reschke (Darien, IL/Hinsdale South) and tying the game moments later when pinch-runner Kaleb Reid (Smithville, MO/Smithville) was sent home a balk on WSC pitcher Joey Lenihan as he was ready to intentionally walk Matt Knickerbocker (Bayfield, CO/Bayfield).

Following the balk and intentional walk, Cameron Burk (Nacogdoches, TX/Cushing) reached on an error that allowed Zach Bracken (Berthoud, CO/Berthoud) to cross the plate to put S&T up 10-9.

The Miners were then an out away from closing out the win, but a two-out error kept the inning alive for Cody Castro to drive in the tying run and Aaron Krier to put the Wildcats back in front.

But in the bottom of the seventh, Eli Miller (Shelbyville, IL/Shelbyville) reached on an infield single, stole second and moved to third on Justus Nelson (Plymouth, MN/Robbinsdale Armstrong)'s sacrifice bunt.  After Lucas Swindle (Weldon Spring, MO/Lutheran-St. Charles) grounded out into a drawn-in infield to keep Miller at third, Adam Richter (Breese, IL/Mater Dei) was down to his final strike before he laced a ball into the gap in left center for a game-tying triple.

Four pitches later, Kaleb Reid (Smithville, MO/Smithville) chopped a ball up the third base line that WSC catcher Bodie Cooper tried to barehand, but couldn't get a grip on it as Richter scored the winning run.

The Miners took the initial lead in game one on an RBI double by Richter in the first, then he drove in two more as part of a four-run third that gave the Miners a 5-2 lead.  S&T scored again in the fourth on Reschke's second sacrifice fly of the contest.

Richter and Swindle had three hits apiece for the Miners in the opener, while Richter and Reschke each drove in four.

Anthony Garza (Belleviille, IL/Belleville East) pitched the first five innings for S&T in game one and scattered eight hits with four strikeouts.  Reliever Matt Lamb (Doniphan, NE/Grand Island), the fourth hurler used by the Miners in the game, got the win.

S&T took a first inning lead in game two as well on a two-double by Reschke before the Wildcats tied the contest in the second.  The Miners took the lead back in the third on Bracken's two-out, run-scoring single and then talled four in the fourth, the first run scoring on a throwing error on an errant pick-off attempt and the other three on an inside-the-park home run by Swindle.

Swindle hit a ball that got past a diving Chris May in left and rolled all the way to the fence, allowing him to circle the bases and give S&T a 6-2 advantage.

Wayne State got two runs back in the sixth, only to have the Miners answer back when Miller delivered an RBI triple and come into score on a Nelson sacrifice fly.  S&T put another run on the board in the seventh on a Knickerbocker ground out that scored Richter.

Bracken had three hits for S&T in the nightcap as it outhit the Wildcats (2-3) 12-9.  Starting pitcher Dan Borek (Greenville, WI/Hortonville) got the win in a 5 2/3-inning outing and struck out seven of the 12 hitters fanned by Miner pitchers in the game.

The Miners and Wildcats will wrap up their four-game series with a noon doubleheader on Sunday.
