ROLLA, Mo. – Thanks to a pair of complete game performances, Missouri S&T completed a sweep of its four-game weekend series Sunday with Wayne State (Neb.) at the S&T Ballpark with wins of
2-1 and
10-2.
The Miners scored both of their runs in the fourth inning of game one to back the pitching of
Luke Marcheschi (Bloomington, IL/Central Catholic), then took advantage of the Wildcats' ragged defense in the nightcap as they scored eight unearned runs while
Trent Green (Perryville, MO/Perryville) went the distance on the mound.
In the first game, the Miners ran into some immediate trouble as the first four Wildcats reached base and a run scored along the way on an RBI single by Cody Jenkins. However, with the bases loaded and still nobody out, the Miners got out of the jam by turning a triple play when
Matt Knickerbocker (Bayfield, CO/Bayfield) caught David Janes' liner just above the ground, stepped on second and threw to first to get the third out on the play.
Through the first three innings, the Miners had not hit a ball out of the infield against WSC starter Aiden Breedlove, but that changed immediately in the fourth when
Lucas Swindle (Weldon Spring, MO/Lutheran-St. Charles) hit Breedlove's second pitch of the inning past the bag at the first for a leadoff double. S&T would then load the bases as
Adam Richter (Breese, IL/Mater Dei) was hit by a pitch and
Matt Reschke (Darien, IL/Hinsdale South) drew a walk, preceding
Zach Bracken (Berthoud, CO/Berthoud)'s sacrifice fly that tied the contest.
Knickerbocker then drove in the go-ahead run on a high chopper that was fielded by Breedlove, but he could only get an out at second as Richter crossed the plate.
Marcheschi, who scattered five hits after the three he allowed in the first, pitched around two-out hits in the fifth and sixth once he got the lead and then got three ground ball outs in succession in the seventh to pick up his second win of the season. The Wildcats outhit S&T 8-4 in game one.
The Miners grabbed a first inning lead in the nightcap as
Eli Miller (Shelbyville, IL/Shelbyville) led off with a double and scored on a triple by Swindle; he would come home moments later on Richter's sacrifice fly. S&T then put five runs in the board in the fourth as the Wildcat defense unraveled at a key moment in the inning.
Following a one-out single by Bracken, an error on a potential double play ball allowed
Zach Wiegand (Coppell, TX/Parish Episcopal) to reach. After a sacrifice bunt, Knickerbocker hit a ball that went off the shortstop's glove and into left, allowing two runs to score to double the Miner lead.
Consecutive hits by Miller,
Justus Nelson (Plymouth, MN/Robbinsdale Armstrong) and Swindle followed as the Miners extended their lead to 7-0 by the time the inning ended. S&T scored three more unearned runs in the eighth.
Green, who gave up eight hits and struck out five, lost his shutout in the sixth on Aaron Krier's home run after setting down 16 of the first 18 hitters he faced to get into the win column for the first time this year.
The Miners outhit Wayne State 10-8, with Swindle picking up three hits and driving in three in the second game. Miller, Richter and Bracken all had two hits apiece.
Missouri S&T (6-5) will host Illinois Springfield in a four-game, non-conference series beginning with a single game Friday at 2 p.m.
