ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T came up with some more late inning magic Friday afternoon to record its third straight doubleheader sweep, as
Matt Reschke (Darien, IL/Hinsdale South)'s walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh capped a five-run inning to give the Miners a
7-4 win over Illinois Springfield at the S&T Ballpark. S&T won the opener of the series
10-2.
The Miners, who already own two extra inning wins this season, won a game in walk-off fashion for the second time in less than a week after making up a 4-2 deficit with three outs to go.
Cameron Burk (Nacogdoches, TX/Cushing) led off the bottom of the seventh by lining a triple over the head of right fielder Austin Muench and scored on
Matt Knickerbocker (Bayfield, CO/Bayfield)'s ground out.
Eli Miller (Shelbyville, IL/Shelbyville) followed with an opposite field single and stole second, then
Justus Nelson (Plymouth, MN/Robbinsdale Armstrong) drew a walk that ended the day for UIS starter Ethan Howard. Following the pitching change, Miller broke for third and
Lucas Swindle (Weldon Spring, MO/Lutheran-St. Charles) hit a ball through the vacated third base spot to bring home Miller with the tying run.
After reliever Cameron Zunkel retired
Adam Richter (Breese, IL/Mater Dei) on a fly ball to deep right, Reschke belted a 2-0 pitch over the fence in left center to win it – the first walk-off homer by a Miner in 15 seasons.
S&T jumped in front in the opener with a run in the first – the first earned run allowed this season by Howard -- on an RBI single by Richter, then the Prairie Stars tied it in the second on Drew Harper's RBI hit. The Miners went back into the lead in the fourth when Burk delivered a two-out triple – the first of two in the game – to score Reschke, but UIS took its first lead of the afternoon when it came to bat in the fifth.
After
Dan Borek (Greenville, WI/Hortonville) induced a double play ball to get the first two outs of the inning, the Prairie Stars got hits from Cole Taylor and Trey Hannum ahead of Michael Rothmund's three-run homer that gave Howard and UIS the 4-2 lead that it would take to the seventh.
UIS outhit the Miners 10-9 in the opener, with Miller, Reschke and Burk all getting two hits apiece for S&T. Burk became the eighth player in Miner history to record two triples in the same contest.
Matt Lamb (Doniphan, NE/Grand Island), the third pitcher used by the Miners in game two, got the win in relief.
In game one, the Miners took advantage of two UIS errors in the opening inning to score three times, then broke the game open with a six-run second as 11 men came to the plate.
After the two miscues by the Prairie Stars and a hit batter loaded the bases, Richter drove in two with a hit through the hole into right. The Miners scored their third run of the inning on a double play ball, then following a second inning home run by UIS' Myles Hann, the offense broke loose again in the second.
Following a leadoff hit by Knickerbocker,
Kaleb Reid (Smithville, MO/Smithville) tripled into the corner in left to score the first run of the inning and then came in to score on a wild pitch. A two-out single by Richter scored the third run of the inning, before
Zach Bracken (Berthoud, CO/Berthoud) and Knickerbocker delivered run-scoring hits to cap the scoring in that frame.
That was more than enough for S&T starter
Anthony Garza (Belleviille, IL/Belleville East), who threw a complete game five-hitter with five strikeouts to get his first victory as a Miner.
Richter had three of the Miners' nine hits in the first game
MissourI S&T, which extended its winning streak to six games as it improved to 8-5 on the year, will host the Prairie Stars (7-6) in a noon doubleheader on Sunday.
