ROLLA, Mo. – After opening the season with a pair of series against two nationally-ranked teams, Missouri S&T's baseball will play at home for the first time this weekend as the Miners host Wayne State (Neb.) in a four-game set at the S&T Ballpark.
The Miners and Wildcats will play doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday, with a start time at noon on each day.
Missouri S&T comes into the weekend at 2-5 after facing Emporia State and St. Edward's and will take on a Wayne State team that went 2-1 in its opening weekend of play against Newman. The Miners have picked up both of their wins in extra inning contests, including a 12-inning victory Saturday over St. Edward's.
The Miners come into the series being led by
Matt Reschke (Darien, IL/Hinsdale South), who brings a .370 mark into play and
Eli Miller (Shelbyville, IL/Shelbyville), who has a .367 average. S&T has five primary starters over the .300 mark, including
Lucas Swindle (Weldon Spring, MO/Lutheran-St. Charles) at .350,
Adam Richter (Breese, IL/Mater Dei) at .333 and
Matt Knickerbocker (Bayfield, CO/Bayfield) at .313.
Swindle has the GLVC's sixth-best on-base percentage mark at .615, while Richter leads the Miners with nine runs batted in.
Anthony Garza (Belleviille, IL/Belleville East) has paced the Miner pitching staff with a 3.75 earned run average in 12 innings of work, while
Trent Green (Perryville, MO/Perryville) has a team-high 11 strikeouts in 8 1/3 innings.
Wayne State hit .333 in its opening series at Newman, led by a .455 mark posted by shortstop Tandon Dorn. Outfielder Chris May hit .429 in the two games he appeared in and catcher Bodie Cooper hit .417 during that series. Cooper and first baseman Tanner Simons each drove in six runs as the Wildcats scored 28 runs in those three contests.
The Wildcats used 12 pitchers – none for more than 4 1/3 innings – in the series. Hunter Weinhoff has five strikeouts in two innings pitched, while the WSC defense committed just three errors in those games.
This weekend's series marks the first-ever meeting between Missouri S&T and Wayne State.
