AUSTIN, Texas – Missouri S&T grabbed an early lead in the series finale Sunday with St. Edward's, but a seven-run outburst in the fifth inning propelled the Hilltoppers to a
13-6 win as they took three of four from S&T.
S&T got out in front in the opening inning with a pair of two-out, run-scoring hits. After
Eli Miller (Shelbyville, IL/Shelbyville) opened up matters with an infield single and
Lucas Swindle (Weldon Spring, MO/Lutheran-St. Charles) reached on an error,
Matt Reschke (Darien, IL/Hinsdale South) drove in Miller with a hit to put the Miners on the board.
Moments later,
Zach Bracken (Berthoud, CO/Berthoud) doubled home Swindle to add to S&T's early advantage.
The Miners extended their lead to 5-0 with a run in the second on Swindle's sacrifice fly and two more in the fourth.
Justus Nelson (Plymouth, MN/Robbinsdale Armstrong) singled and a subsequent error on the play allowed
Cameron Burk (Nacogdoches, TX/Cushing) to score, then Nelson scored himself moments later on a hit by Swindle.
St. Edward's got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the fourth on Hunter Courson's RBI double, then turned the game around in the fifth when it exploded for seven runs to take the lead, taking the lead on Gable Whitacre's three-run homer.
The Miners got a run a back in the sixth on an RBI single by
Matt Knickerbocker (Bayfield, CO/Bayfield), but St. Edward's added on runs in both the seventh and eighth innings.
St. Edward's outhit the Miners 17-12 in the contest, with Nelson, Knickerbocker and Reschke all getting two hits each for S&T and Swindle driving in two. Starting pitcher
Trent Green (Perryville, MO/Perryville) took the loss on the hill.
