Miners head back to road to face St. Edward's in Texas

Game Coverage: Live Stats (Active for game in progress)

ROLLA, Mo. – It's back to the road for Missouri S&T's baseball team this weekend as the Miners head to Austin, Texas for a four-game series against St. Edward's University.

The Miners and Hilltoppers will play a single game Friday at 1:30 p.m., followed by a Saturday doubleheader beginning at noon and wrap up the set with a noon contest on Sunday.

S&T won one of three in its opening weekend of play against Emporia State, despite scoring 23 runs in the three contests.  After dropping the first two contests to the Hornets, including one on ESU's final at-bat on Saturday, the Miners pulled out an extra inning win Sunday on Adam Richter (Breese, IL/Mater Dei)'s 11th-inning single to get into the win column for the first time.

Lucas Swindle (Weldon Spring, MO/Lutheran-St. Charles) went five-of-nine with five runs scored in the opening series of the year and reached base 10 times, while Eli Miller (Shelbyville, IL/Shelbyville) tied an S&T single-game record Sunday with five hits and comes into the weekend sporting a .533 average.  Richter drove in eight in the ESU series and hit .417 in the three contests.

The Miner pitching staff struggled, however, in the windy conditions over the weekend but allowed only 15 runs in the final two games, only 11 of which were earned.  Trent Green (Perryville, MO/Perryville) struck out seven in four innings in his opening day start, while Dan Borek (Greenville, WI/Hortonville) scattered nine hits in six innings of work on Saturday.

Luke Marcheschi (Bloomington, IL/Central Catholic), who appeared in two of the three games, got the win in relief on Sunday.

St. Edward's is 7-4 on the season prior to facing Houston-Victoria on Tuesday evening after taking three of four in a weekend series against Colorado School of Mines.  The Hilltoppers have batted .333 as a team during its first 11 games of the season, led by a .444 mark posted by Carson Cox.

Gable Whitacre is hitting .429 on the season with a team-high 12 runs batted in, while William Hairston has driven in 11 while hitting .409.  St. Edward's has hit nine home runs in its first 11 contests, with Whitacre, Hairston and Romeo Cortina leading the way with two apiece.

The Hilltopper pitching staff, meanwhile, has recorded a 2.56 earned run average and has held opposing hitters to a .235 batting average.  The four Hilltopper pitchers who have combined to make the team's 11 starts have a combined earned run average of 1.43, led by Stuart Springer's 0.84 ERA.  Another member of that group, Tanner Lawson, has fanned 24 hitters in 17 innings of work.

St. Edward's took two of three from the Miners in the last matchup of the teams early in the 2015 season.
