Rolla, Mo. – Missouri S&T's volleyball team dropped a three set match to Lindenwood on Tuesday evening at the Bullman Multi-Purpose. The Miners had difficulty containing the trio of Sadie Kosciuk, Emily Wylie and Kathryn Finnerty who combined for 36 of the Lions 50 kills in the contest.
S&T (5-14) held an early lead but Lindenwood (13-8) used a 6-1 run to take the lead for good. The Miners closed the gap to one a few times but were never able to get over the hump. The Lions used an 8-3 to close out the set and win 25-20. Lindenwood hit .353 in the opening set while holding S&T to .100 hitting percentage. The Lions also had four blocks in the opener.
The second set featured 10 ties and six lead changes. The Miners fell behind by three points early but used a 15-8 run to take a 15-11 lead on a kill by
Claire Friedlund (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South). S&T would stretch its lead to 22-17 but was unable to close out the set as Lindenwood used a 7-2 run to even the frame at 24 after a kill by Kosciuk. The Miners got to their second set point of the stanza on a kill by
Emilee Schlader (Lewiston, Idaho/Lewiston) but once again couldn't finish it. The Lions eventually took the set 29-27 after a kill from Ivy Reynolds and an ace from Kosciuk.
Lindenwood used a 7-2 run early in set three to build a five point advantage. S&T climbed back to within 11-10 on a kill from
Payton Gannaway (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) but the Lions countered with a six straight points to build a seven-point cushion. The Miners were unable to get closer than five points the rest of the way as Lindenwood completed the sweep with a 25-19 victory.
S&T finished the contest hitting just .153 and recorded 36 kills.
Carlie Combs (O'Fallon, Mo./St. Dominic) was the lone Miner to reach double figures with 11 kills while
Kyley Thompson (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) added six kills.
Alexis White (Auburn, Wash./Riverside) handed out 17 assists while
Eva Mich (St. Peters, Mo./Francis Howell Central) had 12 digs.
The Lions finished the contest hitting .281 as a team. Kosciuk had a match-high 14 kills while Wylie added 12 and Finnerty finished with 10. Ivy Reynolds had a match-high 25 assists and Megan Hellwege had a match-high 26 digs.
The Miners are back in action on Friday when they take on Ohio Dominican in the first of three matches at the Midwest Region Crossover in Aurora, Ill., beginning at 2:30 p.m.
